Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 57 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ultra C on 10/17/2021 & rated 87 points: Definitely past it’s peak. No structure , no tannins, just a hint of sweetness (oxidation?), but still pleasant (692 views)
Tasted by bechi on 12/30/2017 flawed bottle: Little bit corked, but despite that, I'd guess this would have been better a year ago. Drink now or regret it later. (2145 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 12/25/2016 & rated 90 points: Mellow and layered, with some dusty berry flavors and a nice hint of leather. (2563 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/6/2015 & rated 87 points: Ripe berries, vanilla, a bit of herb, bramble. A bit less pronounced than many other Ridge bottlings. On the palate, not a lot of structure, good richness, but a short finish. Good. (3358 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 6/14/2015 & rated 95 points: Splendid showing for this wine, which achieved what many Ridge wines do in their more advanced ages--show the impeccable balance between the ripe fruit, the tannic structure, the fine acidity and the signature of the winemaker, a dusty and earthy berry aroma and flavor. Bravo yet again. (3495 views)
Tasted by BuffaloLou on 1/23/2015 & rated 89 points: Big black fruits with a long vanilla finish. Soft tannins. A bit one dimensional, but very tasty none-the-less. Viscous; fills the mouth with silky deliciousness. (3482 views)
Tasted by kosinski on 12/5/2014: Aroma: Jammy blackberry and vanilla.
Palate: Jammy berry compote with a hint of green herbs and a vanilla finish. Mature, soft tannin. Not a lot of structure. Drink soon. (2340 views)
Tasted by al-Zabba on 3/9/2014: Paired with fried chicken and BBQ rib tips with fries and coleslaw. Pretty good pairing, despite the fact that this is not one of my preferred Ridge bottlings. The '07 was probably just post-peak though. (2508 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 1/8/2014 & rated 88 points: This bottle showed the classic Draper perfume and palate of dusty raspberries. A bit one-dimensional but still a nice drink with German sausages. (2049 views)
Tasted by will2wine on 12/8/2013 & rated 90 points: Big, sweet, and juicy. Very Californian, but wouldn't have guessed it was a Ridge without the label--it lacks the vegetal or spice notes that complicate other Ridge reds. (2189 views)
Tasted by bechi on 10/11/2013 & rated 89 points: Chocolate-covered strawberries, next to no tannins and a tingling acidity. Nice drinking wine, but one I would never guess to be a Ridge zin. (1934 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 9/14/2013: Can really taste the petit Sarah. (1984 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 6/28/2013: Similar notes to 1/20/13. Red fruit more prevalent in the first hour of decanting. (1652 views)
Tasted by ftc on 5/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Vibrant dark garnet color. Nose of cassis and a pleasing bit of dusty dirt road. Abundant blackcurrant jam, prune, blackberry and pomegranate fruit. Pushes right to the edge of how fruit forward I like my reds to be but doesn't go over it. Medium to light body; low acidity and the faintest dust of tannins tells me to enjoy my remaining three bottles over the next year or two. Alcohol is very well integrated even on the pop-and-pour. Super value at $20. (1640 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 1/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 90 minutes and drank over ther next two hours. This is a full bodied Zin with lots of plum and a layer of light red fruit and some heat. Finish is deep and full of pepper and bramble. (1951 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 11/22/2012 & rated 91 points: 15.5 % alcohol. Decanted and served. Clear dark inky purple. Reticent bouquet, bloomed after 15 minutes to reveal a sweet port-like perfume of blackberry jam, with earth, spicy oak, and noticeable alcoholic heat. Similar on the palate. Outstanding wine for those not put off by the port-like style. (2276 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 11/20/2012 & rated 90 points: Drinking perfectly right now, with the signature dusty raspberry nose and palate. A tad simple, but very enjoyable anyway. (2024 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 9/23/2012 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Much improved over a previous pop and pour. Huge amounts of plum and blackberry with a nice layer of spice/pepper. 91-92. (2358 views)
Tasted by ChrisBeacham on 9/8/2012 & rated 91 points: Beautiful purple-red. Nice nose of blackberries, bit ripe raspberry, Am. oak, spice. Some tannin but mostly resolved. Medium bodied with great Zin fruit with the Petite adding some pepper, black fruit and earth to the mix. Lovely spice finish with enough acidity to balance the ripe fruit.

I didn't notice the high alcohol content, finding it beautifully balanced and a pleasure to drink. It's in a great place. With a case remaining I'll try again in 3 months. Yum. (2385 views)
Tasted by njAndrew on 8/4/2012 & rated 89 points: Great fruit, touch of spice. (1986 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 4/5/2012 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour but gave some air and swirl in the glass. dark fruit hidden in the background with some spice/bramble. I will decant the next time. (2235 views)
Tasted by pkbackman on 3/17/2012 & rated 86 points: Very fruity, almost like grape jelly. Not a lot else going on with this. It was tasty, just not interesting. (2464 views)
Tasted by Quarked on 2/5/2012 & rated 92 points: Nearly flawless. Blackberries/black cherries, smoke, vanilla, full-bodied wine that tastes like there is a lot more than 5% petite sirah in the blend. No sense of the alcohol. My favorite wine so far this year - reminds of what I have come to expect from Ridge. (2464 views)
Tasted by bmwcarl on 2/1/2012: I don't get the dark, pruny characteristics that some of the other taster are getting. To me, this was a lighter bodied zin with lots of bright fruit and prominent tannins and reflected more of a cool climate approach compared to Paso zins. (2764 views)
Tasted by JOJ on 1/26/2012 & rated 86 points: Aromas of blackberry overwhelmed by smoke and raisin notes. On the palate, blackberry and raspberry, with more smoke. Tannins grip hard and shut down most of the fruit. A little pruny. Decent weeknight wine but nothing more. (2577 views)

Ponzo Vineyard

(Ridge Fall 2012 Wine Club notes)

Bob Ponzo has farmed these grapes for us in the Russian River Valley since 1999. Bob's vineyard, on deep, gravely loam soils four and a half miles south of Lytton Springs provides all the fruit for our Ponzo Zinfandel. The Russian River Valley's cooler microclimate ripens the grapes shortly after Lytton Springs and Geyserville. Small amounts of petite sirah are interplanted with zinfandel in the oldest block.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
