Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winiac on 5/29/2023 & rated 90 points: Very expressive and pleasant bouquet. Round and mature wine, but does not have the oomph. (298 views)
Tasted by tthomson53 on 12/9/2017 & rated 86 points: The cork didn't make it to the finish line (16 years), but the wine aged well and was enjoyable, if not particularly remarkable. (2126 views)
Tasted by klezman on 5/27/2016: Aroma filled the room on opening. Having got this from the winery only a couple years ago shows that it's really a wine built to age well. Leather, cheese, cassis, long pepper, hint of earth, all going well. Medium bodied. Tannins are still present but refined. Medium+ finish. Just delicious. (4751 views)
Tasted by binko21 on 9/20/2015 & rated 88 points: Slightly prunny with hints of soft cherry and lavender on nose. On palate you can tell this wine is past its peak, however the flavors are still hanging in there with some nice plum and dark cherry notes. Oak tannins are still present although the acidity is showing more. It did open up throughout the night and was more expressive and fuller bodied 3-4 hours after opening. I gave better rating to previous bottles I have opened up as this one is past it peak slightly. (4185 views)
Tasted by Coleman on 3/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Nose is a little muted, but some cassis and plum. Palate is big and complex, with black currant, blackberry, vanilla. Long finish, amazingly tight for an older wine, with a strong tannic backbone. (4755 views)
Tasted by Kmarzec on 9/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Still good
(4960 views)
Tasted by dbernard10 on 11/10/2013: After reading several of the tasting notes stating this wine had passed it's prime we opened the bottle. Drinkable - but well passed it's prime; confirmed. (4641 views)
Tasted by jvanasco on 4/5/2013 & rated 90 points: i forgot i still had this. thoroughly enjoyable, but past it's prime and fading fast.

if you have any left, i'd drink it within the next few months. (3845 views)
Tasted by hellowine on 1/4/2013 flawed bottle: I've been drinking up some old stuff that my family admits hasn't been stored the best over the last 4 years. This in particular seems to have suffered to the point of being undrinkable. Thin with a very acidic high note. This bottle had nothing of merit and I suspect it's defective especially since Richard Jennings had just a great magnum a year ago. (3549 views)
Tasted by jvanasco on 11/16/2012 & rated 87 points: This was considerably 'weak' compared to how I remembered this same vintage 7 years ago. It's a great wine still, but it definitely tastes like it's winding down and past it's prime. (3352 views)
Tasted by Vino2Vino on 6/16/2012 & rated 89 points: Putting off a bit of heat. Maybe a bit longer decanting? Smoother than other years I've tried of this wine. Has that French style earthiness, but more reserved. Complex flavors on the tongue. Nice, juicy fruit. (3129 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/21/2012 & rated 90 points: 2001 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective (Meadowood, St. Helena, California): From a double magnum - very dark ruby color; maturing, baked berry, black raspberry, seaweed nose; tart black cherry, black currant palate; medium-plus finish (3260 views)
Tasted by wehouck on 12/3/2011 & rated 92 points: Well rounded Napa cab that begins with the darkest end of the cork I've ever seen. This deep ruby red wine clings to the sides of the glass. Despite being This 10 years old, it still has moderate oak mixed with blackberries in the nose that entices you to dig into the glass. Currents of delicious complex flavors course over the palate, including blackberries, dark cherries, and plumb. Long, lingering, lovely finish of the same flavors that grace the palate upon the first sip. Tannin is present, but nicely compliments the eintire tasting experience. (2694 views)
Tasted by davidwilliamson on 10/21/2011 & rated 87 points: A touch past prime. Very tight, but finally opened up before fading. Oak and cassis, and earthy notes - nice, but just a bit too late. (2330 views)
Tasted by JOEABR on 9/22/2011 & rated 93 points: This is drinking very well at this point in time. Fully resolved with fruit and tannin in perfect balance. Plenty of structure and fruit, with no harsh edges, green or oak. Great mouthfeel and reminiscent of the St Supery cabs I've had from the mid-90's. 93 (1926 views)
Tasted by MFC on 9/15/2011 & rated 89 points: Color is still deep, meniscus starting to show signs of red brick. Nose is leather and pencil led with slight floral undertones. The tannins are still firm and it drinks slightly hot for a ten year old wine. Good food wine, I wouldn't crack this one open while watching re-runs of CSI Miami sitting on the couch. (1901 views)
Tasted by Sparty1983 on 9/5/2011 & rated 95 points: Very smooth - paired exceptionally well with Filet Mignon! (1935 views)
Tasted by acordell on 5/15/2011 & rated 89 points: Spicy & peppery. Very interesting. (2723 views)
Tasted by aveeck on 4/24/2011 & rated 90 points: This wine was great after 10 years; a little vegetal and funny on the nose, but great body and pepper. (2794 views)
Tasted by PolarBear22 on 4/16/2011 & rated 90 points: Still doing wonderfully. Decanted for 45 minutes. Had it with grilled ribeyes. Tannins are smooth. Nice fruit with great balance. Nice long finish. (2428 views)
Tasted by PolarBear22 on 8/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Decanted about 30 minutes. With grilled filet mignon. Great color and nose. Still lots of fruit coming through. Tannins are smooth. This wine is wonderful right now. (2844 views)
Tasted by vegaswino on 7/13/2010 & rated 91 points: Solid cabernet from a great winery. I definitely think its at its peak. Thoroughly enjoyed. I would not hold these much longer if you have a few laying around as they might start to decline next year. (2959 views)
Tasted by PolarBear22 on 5/16/2010 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 30-60 minutes before dinner. Nice deep color. Great nose and flavor. Very smooth, silky tannins. Wonderful complement for the grilled steaks. This is drinking very well. I plan to drink my remaining bottles by the end of the year. (2944 views)
Tasted by bearo80 on 4/3/2010 & rated 82 points: The wine looks Ruby colored.
The legs are Medium.
It smells like Raspberry, and Asparagus.
It tastes like Raspberry, Plum, with tannins.
The body is Medium.
The wine is textured Linear.
The wine finishes Medium. (3038 views)
Tasted by Fozziedoggie on 5/17/2009 & rated 89 points: Consistent wine with good fruit profile (dark cherries), tannins are present and well integrated. Popped and poured but could have used more time in the decanter; tight at first but softened within 30 minutes. Had a nice silky mouth feel; this wine drinks like a more expensive Cabernet. Time to drink this one. (3532 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
