| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by wculpepper on 7/27/2015 & rated 87 points: Decanted and found light sediment. Waited an hour to pour a glass. Dark ruby color. Light nose of blackberry. Medium-to-full bodied blackberry on the palate with high acids and moderate tannins. An OK wine, but nothing special. Would work with a steak. (1787 views) | | Tasted by Shaun Mondavi on 5/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Dark purple body. Nose of Blackberry, currant, pepper, smoke and meat. Smooth after a 1hr decant.
Last bottle of a case I ordered in 2012. Spent its entire life in my overflow rack, so the temperature swings may have accelerated it its maturation. If I knew then what I know now it would have been in the cellar. Wish I had more, this was very enjoyable and much more complex than I remember it. (2161 views) | | Tasted by Grenville1947 on 10/15/2014 & rated 85 points: Still very fruit forward. Tannin dominated the mid palate. Acidity was good. Integration of flavors was lacking. (2252 views) | | Tasted by bugdoced on 11/3/2013 & rated 88 points: amazingly tight for the entire night makes me think this is a hold for now there are secrets to be revealed if you are more patient than I was (2698 views) | | Tasted by Xfactor on 1/10/2013 & rated 88 points: Opens with racy purple fruit. Full-throttle and big throughout, no deft hand here. Textbook New World. (3692 views) | | Tasted by artist777 on 12/29/2012 & rated 85 points: This bottle not as good as first. The nose was kind of funky with smell of old fruit. The palate was nothing special and it seemed the wine was past it's prime. It seemed broken down and did not display much fruit or any of the smoke you would expect from Syrah. (2329 views) | | Tasted by artist777 on 10/8/2012 & rated 88 points: Decanter for an hour prior to pour. Initial nose was dark fruit with dusty overtones. The palate was quite tight with tart cherries and early mulberry. Nothing like the nose suggested. There was not nearly enough smoke or pepper notes as I would have expected with Syrah. I revisited after about 5 hours and it had mellowed and was better with some pepper on the finish, but still a little too acidic for my taste. I will let my other bottle lay for a couple years. (2973 views) | | Tasted by Tim Heaton on 7/13/2012: Consistent tn's. A little more than 2 year since my last bottle, the experience is pretty linear. Good purity to the fruit, above-average acids, a peppery, medium finish, but falls short of the price tag to warrant a recommend. The syrah fruit from these vines over the next decade, now that's something I look forward to. 14,5% abv, drink thru 2014 (2895 views) | | Tasted by thalver on 7/3/2012: We have been through a half case of this now. Generally, fairly expressive on the nose, with notes of dried fruits, earth and something else I cant quite put my finger on. While nice...this has consistently been a bit over-drying on the finish. This most recent bottle did open up over a couple hours to become less so. most bottles 88-89...most recent bottle 91 (2243 views) | | Tasted by cliffo41 on 4/24/2012 & rated 91 points: I made a serious mistake in not ordering more of this. Big, bold, dark red. Complex with blackberries, vanilla, and earth. Remarkably clear when held up to the light; otherwise dark purple in the glass. The finish just won't quit. Outstanding value. (1753 views) | | Tasted by thalver on 4/14/2012: Opened a day after shipment, so final judgement reserved. Initially very tight, the nose started to blossom after about half an hour in the decanter. Very syrah on the nose.. meaty with some blue fruit. On the palate, it showed a bit thinner than the promise of the nose. Medium finish with drying tannins. (1409 views) | | Tasted by Xfactor on 4/14/2012 & rated 89 points: Purple-maroon robe. Red plum and red licorice, little nutmeg and cinnamon on the nose. Light, tempered acidity - body - red plum with pomegranate compote, but not too complex. Short fruit at finish, med-long acidity and tannins, more plum with cranberry. Reminded me a lot of a field blend. 89/B = 50/5/11/7/8/8 (1750 views) | | Tasted by Tim Heaton on 4/9/2010: Decanted 1 hr, could have used 2. Dark ruby core with dark cherry robe. The nose presents plums, grilled red meats, dim notes of dark spice, and grilled Italian sausage. This is missing some of the complexity I was hoping for. The palate serves up a broad entry with the purity of fruit showing immediately, and becomes even more mouth-filling as the tannins begin to take hold. Flavors of red currant, creamy raspberries, blueberry, anise and a kiss of vanilla bean. 30+ second finish. Approx $38, 14,5% abv, drink thru 2013. (2093 views) |
| By Benjamin T. Weinberg Sommelier Journal, April 2010 (Bugay Vineyards Syrah) Dark, rich berries and chocolate dominate this full-bodied beast, with an earth-and-stone background that results in a wonderfully balanced bottle. All that richness makes it easy to drink on its own, but the extreme depth perfectly matches rich game birds and spicy lamb. Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountySonoma CountySonoma Coast |
