In Vino Veritas (in wine there is truth; people speak the truth when they are drunk), bottle #149-154 of my cellar sacrifices. I put together a six bottle vertical of Viader, starting with 1995 and ending with 2000, with the help of Alan and Delia Viader in filling my vertical. A friend hosted an amazing dinner for the six of us which was outstanding! Great food and 11 other bottles brought by another couple, the Viader was poured during the main course. Needless to say, we planned ahead for Uber.
A brief background on Viader- Delia Viader was born in Argentina but the best then spent lots of time in France. She graduated with a PhD from Sarbonne and moved to California as the single mother of four. She asked her dad for a loan to buy the land. He thought she was crazy because he had already paid for her degree and now she wanted to be a “farmer”. Anyway, she went on to develop many firsts in Napa, with growing vertically instead of horizontally, mixing Cab Franc with Cabernet Sauvignon, and too many to list. She is respectfully known as the “Mother of wine”.
The tasting was a huge success and it seemed no one could agree on a favorite. To me, the 2000 was my fav. Thank you Alan and Delia Viader for making this happen as we all loved these wines! 🍷🍷🍷🍷👍👍👍👍 #wine #winelover #winelovers #redblend #redblendwine #viaderwinery #viader #alanviader #deliaviader #cabernetsauvignon #cabernetfranc #napawine #napa #napavalley #napacab (2904 views) | | Tasted by Elpaninaro on 6/5/2021: deep red young color, a nose of ripe fruit with a good bit of oak, sweet cherries and plums, on the palate a bit muted relative to the nose but clearly with a good depth of fruit, smooth and almost elegant delivery, oak still a fairly strong presence, good finish but a bit raw on the tail end, this is a solid modern approach California wine in many respects but at 21 years of age is showing shockingly little development, and so I would expect limited future evolution more along the lines of slowly mellowing versus making a dramatic transformation.

(3301 views) | | Tasted by ipp on 11/2/2019 & rated 93 points: I have not had this particular wine in a long time. I am glad I pulled it from the cellar. big, beautiful nose of dark fruit, hints of stone and dust. palate first hint of cooking spices, mostly cinnamon. soft tannins, balance by good acidity. new world nose, old works palate. good finish. nice surprise from a less than stellar vintage. BTW - still has a few years left. (3901 views) | | Tasted by mfriedman12 on 10/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Fantastic wine drinking really well now. Lots of fruit and game with great depth. (2118 views) | | Tasted by GlenviewGSW on 2/12/2019 & rated 95 points: This is a home run. Really surprised how well this was drinking. Agree with prior poster that this wine is very Bordeaux like in its profile with game and smoked notes and Stoney mineral elements but would say the finish has a little more new world flair and length. Outstanding wine. Need to find more. (2821 views) | | Tasted by Ruby99 on 7/19/2018 & rated 93 points: A delightful surprise that this wine is drinking so well right now. Very Bordeaux-like Leather and game on the nose Ultra-fine tannin, medium body. Black cherry and raspberry fruit predominate. Leather and a hint of green tomato in the background (3222 views) | | Tasted by Dooms on 7/2/2018 & rated 94 points: Tasted this at the Winery on 6/17/18 From Winery Cellar. Served with roasted lamb, beet salad, asparagus, and roasted fingerling potato's. The wine looks inky colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like forest floor, black currant (cassis), espresso and cedar. It tastes like blackberry, black currant (cassis), cedar, lead pencil and tobacco. (3045 views) | | Tasted by passion4wine on 11/18/2017 & rated 93 points: A beautiful showing for this 2000 Viader with notes of bittersweet chocolate, blackberry, earth and mushroom on the nose and creamy mushroom, cola, and pomegranate on the palate with a finish that seduces for nearly a minute. (3343 views) | | Tasted by rmalloy on 6/9/2017 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind. Cab family greenness on the nose. Too green for me, but I’ve been hypersensitive to greenness recently, and I felt the greenness started to come into balance with time in the decanter. Rich plummy fruit. Meaty and chocolatey. Smooth texture. Some Asian spice on the finish. There’s a sense of wildness to this wine — it goes in all sorts of places, not all of which I enjoy. Tannins remain serious, but about right to my tastes. Can drink now, but no hurry. Rating: 90.
Guess the wine: Playing the odds, given what’s in my “cellar,” I have to go with Bordeaux. Margaux? 10+ years old.
Non-blind p.s.: One thing I feel sure about is that this wine is not on a steep downhill slide. Nothing about it was "over the hill" to my tastes. If anything, I think it might improve with a few more years of aging. (4344 views) | | Tasted by JS1056 on 5/12/2017 & rated 85 points: 2000 was a poorly rated vintage but to this point all of the 2000 I have had this year have been very good. This wine however didn't keep the streak alive. The nose was promising; very pretty with leather and some dark fruit. However, this was very ordinary on the palette. There was some spice and leather. And maybe a bit of tobacco on the finish but it was pretty hollow. It was more interesting than generic cabernets but really didn't make much of an impression either way. As I noted above, I have had 3 or 4 2000 Cabernets in the last few months and all of them have been surprisingly good, with a complexity that was intriguing. Not at all fruit forward but really Bordeaux like. This didn't have the fruit either, but the complexity was missing. What remaind was a earthy wine without much character, not bad but not good either. (3858 views) | | Tasted by jzebrack on 4/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Really smooth. No decant necessary. Can drink right after opening. Did not taste much change over the course of the next couple hours. (3090 views) | | Tasted by tbushnell on 3/25/2017 & rated 95 points: Great nose. Maybe one of the better noses for a 2000. The wine was perfect. Great structure, it was on the down hill slide. But still great for a few years. So dang good. Last bottle of 18. Sad it was the last (3314 views) | | Tasted by Whodeyinsea on 1/21/2017 & rated 93 points: Good mature Napa Cab with blue fruit becoming tobacco as it opens up. (3084 views) | | Tasted by dutradan@msn.com on 1/11/2017 & rated 90 points: Still nice fruit, smooth earthy, did I say smooth? sweet integrated fine tannins. lovely ! Drink up with a filet or seared Ahi (1300 views) | | Tasted by tbushnell on 12/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Old cab...but it's so well made and so smooth. Don't decant (2178 views) | | Tasted by OenophilistMN on 1/6/2016 & rated 89 points: I always see Viader as the affordable and perfect meld of Bordeaux and Napa and think of it as a less-expensive Opus. Bright garnet bowl, no bricking; clarity was perfect. Wonderful nose of Napa fruit and a green pepper-spice overlay from the Cab Franc. In the mouth, the wine was deep, with the red fruit filling the mouth, some oak and the Cab Franc green pepper. Long finish. I actually think this wine was opened pre-peak. Another 5 years IMO. But very good now with a grilled steak. (1273 views) | | Tasted by Wine_Bear on 10/31/2015 & rated 94 points: Very Bordeaux style. Classic bouquet of cassis, berries. Balanced. Specific layers emerge: raspberry, blackberry, bing cherries, butterscotch, walnuts. Later on, citrus - orange, lemon, tangerine. Pepper. Then cherries and apples. Incredible trip, great wine. Ready to drink, this will not get any better, and it is wonderful now. (3836 views) | | Tasted by no leashes on 9/14/2015 & rated 90 points: Very tasty, fully mature and drinking well. Very pretty secondary aromas and flavors here. Drinking very well now and probably will for a few more years (3863 views) | | Tasted by yipen on 4/9/2015: Cork broken while opening the wine. but wine did not seep through cork badly, it is just cork is fragile after years. Fully mature and soft velvelty due to the Cab franc. A good wine to drink now (3801 views) | | Tasted by no leashes on 3/17/2015 & rated 90 points: Delicious mature cab, smooth and elegant. (2263 views) | | Tasted by AP MD on 3/6/2015 & rated 90 points: The wine looks brick colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like red currant, fig, vanilla and bark. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has low acidity. | Viader Producer website Photos of a Viader Nape Valley Estate visit ... https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2021/03/viader-napa-valley-syrah-2004.htmlRed Bordeaux BlendRed Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
