Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Blauweiss on 2/9/2024 & rated 93 points: Classic bdx, ticks all the boxes with its lovely structure, medium body and great length. A bit sleek in comparison to other, more hyped vintages, but this is just really tasty! (1362 views)
Tasted by castle.rob@gmail.com on 2/8/2024 & rated 98 points: Medium purple with hints of garnet Fruit forward on the nose, blackberries, cedar, cigar box, and baking spices Great flavor, black tea, blackberries, licorice, and some hard candy on the finish Fine-grained tannins, nice strong acidity, dry and perfectly balanced. It's a really beautiful and luxurious Bordeaux. It is among my favorites so far (1207 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 1/12/2024 & rated 92 points: Greenish, dark nose. Much more classic and austere than the ‘15 or ‘00. Very tannic. Needs years. 92? (1583 views)
Tasted by Jonny Cash on 11/17/2023 & rated 94 points: Wonderful St Julien, better than a Ducru. Just open it and enjoy. A typical Léoville, fruit, acid everything on the right place. (1844 views)
Tasted by EyeDoc on 9/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Nice garnet color - pleasant dark fruits - a very linear wine that follows through consistently across the palate and finish. A lingering soft tannic feel. This opened up nicely over 24 hours. (2387 views)
Tasted by David_K on 6/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Singing. Smell alone is awesome. From 375ml. (2570 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 6/17/2023 & rated 98 points: Popped this. Even before I poured it, I could hardly believe the fabulous fruit coming off the cork: it was pure black licorice, so intense, maybe the most memorable GOOD cork smell in my memory. Once I poured it, I knew I was in for a treat. It has a saturated black-ruby color, with huge red legs that are slowly making their way down the bowl of the glass. Who says '08 wasn't a GREAt vintage? No one who has ever tasted this wine, I'll say that. The nose and palate are otherworldly, so rich, so complex, perfect fruit, just in the right place, flowers, unctuous. I am in AWE. I wish all Bordeaux tasted and smelled like this. It could convince the dead that wine is one of the best things in all of creation. What a beauty!!! And on pop and pour!!! 5-14-19-10: 98/100. (Fully 10 minutes after being poured in the glass, there are red dots of wine halfway up the bowl that haven't budged; amazing.). (2477 views)
Nydelig flaske. (3155 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 12/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Needs air and then this wine shows a beautiful complex fragrant nose of black fruit, violets and pencil lead. Great palate, powerful but not overpowering and keeping it's freshness. Very long tasty finish, great wine. (2835 views)
 Tasted by Bullsfan33 on 10/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Beautiful (3247 views)
Tasted by ELH on 10/9/2022 & rated 94 points: Elegance and finesse. Quiet tannins. Fruit is subtle, dark cherry and cassis, with a whiff of graphite. (3027 views)
Tasted by Sacramento Geezer on 4/24/2022 & rated 96 points: Decanted 4 hrs before dinner and double decanted when setting table. So missed the evolution but enjoyed the wine as it was meant to be. (4258 views)
Tasted by rnyrny79 on 3/12/2022 & rated 94 points: Completely agreeing with previous notes…very classic and very good! (3574 views)
Tasted by CondorKhan on 1/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Pours dark garnet with only the slightest hints of bricking indicating any age. It drops ZERO sediment. Beautiful aroma of dark berries and cedar. On the palate, dark cherry, cassis, graphite. Body is medium light. The tannins and the acidity are significant but tone down with air. It's obviously a wine of impeccable class, without jagged edges, but I think it's in a bit of a strange place... Upon popping, the acidity and minerality are upfront, and that makes it very interesting, but when it gets some air, I don't think the fruit comes out with enough intensity... I suppose I was waiting for some fireworks that never happened. In any case, this is a very classically styled wine that is still very, very young and has many years ahead. I suspect I'd give it a much higher score 5 years from now. (3874 views)
 Tasted by catowne1 on 12/26/2021 & rated 95 points: Stunning (3225 views)
Tasted by nwebstar on 12/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Very cool and classical. Started tight and structured with much promise but didn’t quite release fruit to be magnificent. Very much dark fruited (black & blue berries), dry and savoury. Earthy, char, dry spices with hints of liquorice or olive. Elegant and mid weight. Very good. (Drank over 3-4 hours) (3189 views)
Tasted by Jofie on 11/27/2021 & rated 96 points: Very, very good wine. Needs a couple of hours in the decanter but then it opens up nicely: Dark red fruits, earthy tones, finely integrated tannins and acidity. The wine is smooth, harmonious and almost creamy with a very good length. For me this is a very good drinkable vintage of Las Cases at this stage. (2819 views)
Tasted by Indran Rajendra on 11/20/2021 & rated 97 points: Mahogany but hints of mauve. Minimal stain on cork suggests good provenance. Aged aromas (mushroom) appear after 1/2 hour. Blackcurrant, blueberries, dark cherries, minerals.lemon grass and mint. Slightly too tart. Tannins slightly bitter and harsh. Riedel glasses. 16 deg C. Estimated window maturity 2025-2045. (2798 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 6/20/2021 & rated 94 points: Wonderful wine that still tastes young. More fruit forward without significant secondary characteristics. would try again in 5+ years. (3606 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 5/2/2021 & rated 95 points: In the bouquet dark berries like cassis. On the palate the same berries, licorice, beautiful and firm acidity and tannin. Very classical wine which already shows some of its potential beauty, but is in fact still quite locked. For now 94 - 95. For the future at least 96 - 97+ (Around 2030 and later.) (3951 views)
Tasted by beau11 on 2/25/2021 & rated 97 points: Very nice bottle and amazing in an off year. Classically styled. Not a big wine but more finesse and balance. Decanted 1/2 the bottle day 1 and recorked for day 2. Improved slightly day 2 with a bit more depth and expression, but still very nice day 1. At the early stage of maturity with plenty of years to go before peaking. Flavors of cassis, slightly unripened blackberry, with lots of herbs, graphite and minerality. (4230 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 1/30/2021 & rated 96 points: Wow, so much class and finesse. The nose reveals fine tobacco, black fruit, rubber, salty dust and some pencil shavings. This is still quite young with massive, but ultra refined tannins and a lively, intense acidity. I would guess it needs at least another 5 years to reach maturity and than should effortlessly age for 2 or more decades. Probably one of the wines of this Bdx vintage. (4021 views)
Tasted by gothamfreerider on 11/24/2020 & rated 95 points: Flavors of bitter choclate, kumquat, charcoal, and raw blackberries. While many of its peers from the ‘08 vintage are approaching ‘prime time’, this needs more time. It’s good, gonna be great. Excited ! (4369 views)
Tasted by LDA ZH CH on 11/12/2020 & rated 97 points: Fantastic bottle. Very noble expression of St-Julien with cassis and cigar notes. Mid-weight on the palate but the equilibrium is spectacular. While I don’t see this getting better going forward, I feel no rush to drink the remaining bottles (3751 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 6/5/2020 & rated 93 points: This is class! Right after opening there's a lot of oak but with a beautiful sweet perfume. Big palate and an endless finish. Great wine but years too young. Needs at least 5 more years to integrate and realy show it's class. (4413 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
