Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ogres3 on 3/15/2024 & rated 92 points: This is a delicious 100% zin. Lots of sediment. Has aged quite well. Ripe smooth purple fruit, very long finish. Probably was a bargain 17 years ago... (122 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 4/2/2023: An odd vintage for this wine. It really comes off as if they really tried to push it a little bit in a more modern sense. Initially when popped it smelled like a dense Central Coast Syrah though the palate was more reserved. Fifteen minutes of air allowed those Zinberry qualities emerge yet this is still a lot darker in character than a lot of Zins. The fruit is still fresh for its age. The density really lingers and becomes more noticeable as there is less acidity than it really needs to be balanced. Consistent over two nights. Half a glass left to night four shows a lot of new wood. The fruit isn't oxidized as much as faded. Mixed bag here. Not really what I want from Jimsomare though this wine is intriguely dense and young. (462 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 12/5/2022 & rated 91 points: Purchased at the Sonoma winery in 2009. At some point I forgot about it in a dark corner of the cellar, and was a bit nervous about opening a 15-year old zin. But it was pretty good! Still some lively fruit, very smooth, zin spices, and no over-the-hill type flavors. Drink up. (446 views)
Tasted by rhanke on 10/28/2019 & rated 92 points: Drinking great. Enjoyed. (1267 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 9/24/2018 & rated 91 points: Drinking well. Relatively fresh exciting and complex fruit. Full-bodied but light. Medium red and blue fruit, lots of berry. Nice finish. (1430 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 9/11/2018 & rated 91 points: Very dry. Amazingly young vibrant fruit, light on it's feet. More berry than dark, but in a good way. Different and interesting. Conversational finish. Bought some '16 after finishing this bottle. (1331 views)
Tasted by radumas on 3/11/2018 & rated 88 points: Rich, ripe, plum-prune fruit dominates. Not enough acid to age further. (1496 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 2/27/2018 & rated 92 points: The volatile acidity present in prior bottles has integrated nicely. Still a bit in the nez, along with deep black fruit. It’s got a nice mouthful of black and blue berries but dries up a bit on finish. The tannins caress, the flavors linger in a considerable lengthy finish. Can’t get better, darn great now. Drink. (1407 views)
Tasted by davetong on 7/20/2017 & rated 93 points: In a great place right now (2068 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 11/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Served with stuffed pork chops and mashed cauliflower.
Dark crimson, no longer opaque, sediment on side of bottle.
Nose: cherry, touch of blueberry. Nice fruit.
Palate: fruit is dominant, cherry is primary, acid is in balance, tannin muted. Drinking very nicely right now. Raspberry and pepper is on the finish. (1209 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 11/6/2015: Brambly, blueberry, and blackberry. Very juicy. Fine tannins with a medium finish. (1762 views)
Tasted by VinoPKM on 5/30/2015 & rated 92 points: A little Jammy- but this is a Zin. So well balance and really was the right amount of jammy fruit (not cloying) you want in a Zin.
Highly recommend this Zin and wished I had more. This is want Ridge Zin are and should be.
Just coming into its sweet spot and has a ton of life ahead- this is a 15-20 yr Zin. (1861 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 4/21/2015 & rated 93 points: Jammy fruit, balanced tannin and acid (1786 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 1/13/2015: Nice wine. The bold fruit is a bit jammy but this has the acidity to keep everything in check. This will last but it's in a nice place now. (1865 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 11/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Jammy,'peppery smooth finish (1631 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 11/7/2014: Still alive and kicking. Nice secondary notes coming out. A little tobacco with dark fruit on the nose. Tart cherry with smooth tannins. Still drinking nice, but wouldn't wait too much longer. (1219 views)
Tasted by MusignyBlanc on 10/14/2014: Very dark and intense fruit, but sufficient structure against it. After opening the mid-palate had a bit of lactic/milky quality; it was pretty subtle, however. (1369 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 10/12/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark fruit, cherry, vanilla spicy and smooth finish (1099 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 2/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Aging nicely. Juicy blackberry with nice acid and a medium finish. (1472 views)
Tasted by jedyejr on 12/22/2013 & rated 89 points: The wine looks Garnet colored. The legs are Medium. The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Leathery texture. The wine finishes Medium. A bit acidic and I would wait another year or two to calm down. With that, after a couple of hours it opened up nicely and very enjoyable. (1438 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 7/26/2013 & rated 79 points: As with the last bottle earlier this month, this bottling, or at least mine, have been off. The main issue is a huge waft of volatile acidity that only moderates slightly over night. When opened, I thought my wife had brought nail polish remover in the room, that's how bad the keytone notes were in the wine. Hard to get much more out of the wine. I believe this was flawed at the winery and should have been pulled by Ridge. (1680 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 7/4/2013 & rated 80 points: Definitely something off with this bottle. Loaded with volatile acidity and not much else. (1541 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 6/9/2013 & rated 89 points: Direct from cellar - was a bit cool and didn't have time to open.
Looks put this as a very young wine, deep garnet all the way to the rim.
Good nose, good balance. (1622 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 5/26/2013 & rated 92 points: Excellent jimsomare fruit bomb w balanced tannins, acid and long finish. Classic jimsomare. (1272 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 3/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Sour cherry and dark fruit on the nose. Bright acidity with smooth tannins. Drinking nice righ now. (1380 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia

Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
