Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 8/12/2018 & rated 92 points: Inky color. Dense, ripe, very intense blackberry, plum notes. Olive and sage savory notes. A bit of balsamic on the finish. Still a big bruiser of a wine, this has not evolved much. Very unique flavor profile- more Cali than French. (1042 views)
Tasted by Modern Tage on 4/6/2017 & rated 95 points: Multi-dimention
and layer upon layer

A breathe taking wine! (1607 views)
Tasted by grapist on 9/26/2015 & rated 96 points: Absolutely requires over an hour to open and show its stuff. Patience is rewarded with quite a spectacular wine. Tons of fruit without being over the top. A Syrah that rates with greats of the Northern Rhone. (1618 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 6/8/2013 & rated 94 points: Dreamtasting #5 (Restaurant Merlet, Schoorl): This wine impresses due to its awesome personality, which is very refreshing and pure. Gorgeously seductive mixture of creme de cassis, rspberries, rhubarb and black truffles. Still somewhat tannic and also warm and slightly sweet, but very persistent and convinving. This is a beautiful syrah in an open and international style, but definately deserves its place in the middle of the Hermitage-Barossa-Central Coast-Triangle. 18.5/20 (3156 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 6/8/2013 & rated 94 points: Dream tasting (@ Merlet): In the bouquet a lot of dark and ripe forest fruits like blackberries. On the palate a lot of sweet and ripe black berry fruits as well. Some chocolate, beautiful fresh acidity and still powerful but also powdery tannin. Many layers on the palate. Beautiful wine with a future until at least the end of the decade. (1928 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 4/21/2013 & rated 93 points: Very New World in style- fruit forward with smoky savory undertones. No finishing heat despite its 16% ABV. A French SQN? (2077 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 5/22/2012: Tasted but notes not kept. (2407 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/11/2011 & rated 91 points: nose: there is a perfumed quality to this, but it is slightly muted as it is tight, with tones of dark berries, spices, herbs, black fruits, and some smoke tones as well.

taste: medium/full bodied with some taught tannins and medium acidity. Balanced with nice depth hiding beneath the structure and dark tones of dark berries, black fruits, spices and some smoke tones.

overall: This seems to have a real bright future in front of it. It was fairly tight in this setting, but not as unforgiving as some of the other wines. (1665 views)
Tasted by NiklasW on 7/7/2009: Visit to La Clape (Narbonne, Languedoc); 7/7/2009-7/9/2009: I visited Chateau de la Negly today and after tasting through a range of Negly wines, this was pulled out for tasting (along with the Clos des Truffiers). Wow, what a wine! 100% Syrah from a vineyard with a view to the Mediterranean (went down to the plot and took some pictures!). Very low yield. The wine was intense with distinct notes of mint, powerful and mind blowing. Really other worldly and a complete change to the other wines I have tasted today from the La Clape. Oh boy, I wish I could afford a bottle, but at €80, I am just happy I had a chance to taste. (3160 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.
