This was nice a refreshing after a big meal. Not to much sugar and not to sweet a great buy for the price and we were able to have more than one glass. I don't usually drink late harvest zins but this one is worth buying. (1456 views) | | Tasted by rourkem on 12/19/2005 & rated 90 points: This is good. My impression is very different after having has so many other LH Zins. This is lighter and more acidic than most of the LH Zins we've liked, with only 8% sugar. I'ts refreshing rather than dark and mouth staining. Good, though. (1705 views) | | Tasted by rourkem on 4/5/2005 & rated 90 points: Never having had a wine like this before it's hard to rate. I very much enjoyed the bottle, as did Jen and Nicole. Tasted best moderately chilled. No taste of alcohol. Very smooth, sweet without being at all cloying. Well balanced. Red berries and maybe grape flavor. Shortish finish. I need to pay closer attention next time, I was playing chess while drinking this. Went *very* well with chocolate. Reminded me just a bit of the Jackson-Triggs Merlot Ice Wine. (1707 views) |
| Harvest Moon Producer Website
Harvest Moon is a family-driven boutique winery nestled in the Russian River Valley that focuses primarily on California's own Zinfandel. The proprietors, Bob and Ginny Pitts, have grown grapes in Russian River Valley since 1977. In 2000, their son Randy assumed the farming responsibilities at the family ranch. Soon after, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel from the ranch that turned out exceptionally good and they realized they had something remarkable growing in their backyard. Although the Estate Zinfandel is their pride and joy, Randy also handcrafts a limited quantity of Estate Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.2004 Harvest Moon Zinfandel Late Harvest79 cases produced of 375 ml splits. Grower & Winemaker's Notes
I cut off the irrigation weeks before harvest. We had selected a very specific vineyard row to produce this very small production of super intense exotic dessert wine. Once fermentation was underway, I tasted the fermenting must twice daily waiting for just the right balance of alcohol, flavor components and residual sugar. When I felt the wine was in balance, I arrested the fermentation via pressing off, dropping the wine temperature to 30 degrees and racking immediately off its lees. Over the next month, I began to filter the microbiological activity out of the wine. I was seeking a wine style that is easy to drink, yet can be taken seriously in any social setting. On December 20th 2004, the juicy nectar was sterile filtered and bottled by my one assistant and me. Other than yeast and oak chips in the tank, this wine is a direct depiction of our Estate zinfandel fruit. I feel extremely fortunate that I had complete control over the family vineyard, as I am convinced this is the only way to make stuff like this.
Tasting Notes
This wine was made from a particularly sunny part of the Estate block. Left for weeks longer on the vine with only sips of water, this wine represents the epitome of our Estate Zinfandel… freshly picked juicy raspberries. Try with dark chocolate or brownies right out of the oven. This wine also pairs well with aged Gouda.

Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyRussian River Valley Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia |
