Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.2 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 58 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cwiebe on 12/13/2013 & rated 87 points: Nose is fairly muted, both right after opening and a day later. Good color, palate is fairly bright with acidity but that also is a bit muted. Flavor is massive sour cherries and some slight meaty component. It's a good mid week meal wine. (5344 views)
Tasted by CarpeVinoDiem on 6/4/2012 & rated 84 points: No notes taken.

Ok but not a rock star Agli by any means/shape/form.

On the thin side and not very bright or well integrated.

With food.

Recommend drink now.

Tasted by gjv115 on 3/29/2012 & rated 85 points: Day one this wasn't very enjoyable, but day two the character I was knew from the 2006 vintage started to show through and it became pleasant to drink, but still astringent. I'm not sure how good this will get, but it has promise. (4597 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 1/25/2012 & rated 86 points: TN; Wines under $18: Aglianico. Tight on the nose. Eventually shows some dark cherries. Very tannic. The only wine on the table that seemed to need more time. Juicy tart dark cherry fruit but a wall of tannins. Somewhat generic I guess, I thought it was a Merlot blind. Never really seemed to open for me. (7297 views)
Tasted by WineGeneral on 11/20/2011 & rated 90 points: Bright cherries and spice dominate on this medium bodied wine with a clean, medium length finish. Paired with ribeye smoked with red wine barrel chunks. Great value at fifteen bucks! (7670 views)
Tasted by BMG Wine on 10/10/2011 & rated 88 points: First experience with Aglianico. Solid pizza wine. (4671 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 9/10/2011 & rated 89 points: Nice Aglianico. Dry, rustic and tremendous value. (3661 views)
Tasted by rfcarney on 7/25/2011 & rated 90 points: excellent (3026 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 7/25/2011 & rated 90 points: great, reasonably priced red that complemented by a heavy Italian dinner. The fine red fruit and bright acidity cut right through all that yummy garlic and aged cheese. (3596 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 5/30/2011: A bit rough and acidic. Really rustic - a little too much so. Better things out there. (3470 views)
Tasted by Julius Squeezer on 5/21/2011 & rated 89 points: A fantastic go to for an everyday Italian red. I love Terredora as a producer in general so I may be a bit biased. Bright fruit, good structure and balance with attractive cherry, violet aromas and flavors. For an Aglianico religious experience, dish out the money for Terradora's 2004 Taurasi which is off the charts intense. (3602 views)
Tasted by bablues on 5/21/2011 & rated 88 points: Very nice Alianico. Medium body with nice red cherry fruit. Agree with the sour and tart flavors, but still in balance with a nice long finish. Excellent value. (3745 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/21/2011 & rated 90 points: Saturdays at One - Volume 48: WIML90

Tasted non blind at a retail tasting.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of leather, white pepper, berries, boysenberries and plums. Good flavors of berries, cherries and raspberries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink now through the next 5 years plus or minus. (2685 views)
Tasted by shanley106 on 5/15/2011 & rated 89 points: Decanted for half an hour with the use of a venturi. I think this likely benefited a great deal as I didn't sense the youthfulness of the wine other reviewers noted. (3614 views)
Tasted by Delli on 5/7/2011 & rated 86 points: Ruby red. Nose of currant, leather and dry wood chips. The palate is dominated by black currants with modest spice under tones. The acidity and tannins are quite mild resulting in a light mouth feel. the finish feels deliberately light. The biggest surprise for me wa the wife liked it -she normally prefers very fruit forward wines. 5/5+11/15+14/20+6/10=86 (3649 views)
Tasted by BYOB on 4/3/2011 & rated 88 points: Nice light red with earthy notes and restrained fruit. (1824 views)
Tasted by frank hertz on 3/28/2011 & rated 88 points: great with shepherd's pie. mmmmmm. reminds me of a petite sirah. grilled maine blueberries... don't exist, but if they did, they'd go down a bit like this. (4005 views)
Tasted by Green Pea on 2/15/2011 & rated 84 points: Ok but nothing special. Decent pizza wine. A touch sour or tart which is fine but nothing to exciting here. I'm supprised by Galloni's notes on this one. (4104 views)
Tasted by kahuna75 on 1/30/2011 & rated 88 points: Mother nature took a dump in a glass and put a grape on top...and I like it- This is a very earthy wine to say the least- The fruit is nice put plays a secondary role to the tannin and acidity. Was not digging this initially as the nose was muted and the bone dry nature had nothing to offset it- Well once I started digging into the the Rigatoni Filetto di pomodoro this wine came alive- the fruit now a little fuller but still second fiddle as the acidity cut through the sauce and the pasta- Even the wife enjoyed this wine though 100% out of her typical zone. All this for $11- there is no doubt some will not find the charm in this wine, especially those embracing the fruit forward wines but if you love old school Sangiovese then branch out and give this Aglianico a try.  Tasted by pandresgi@gmail.com on 1/27/2011 & rated 88 points: I really like this wine for the cost. Black fruit, leather, currant, all well balanced. (4129 views)
Tasted by MyPurpleTeeth.net on 11/26/2010 & rated 88 points: Spiced cherry, blackberry and pomegranate fruit entice with dark chocolate, smoky tobacco and toasted caraway. Elegantly structured with fine tannins and a crack of acidity on the mid palate, flavors of grilled herb, berry and violet emerge. (4543 views)
Tasted by garywa on 11/23/2010 & rated 85 points: Light, thin, drinkable (4585 views)
Tasted by D H Grant on 11/19/2010 & rated 85 points: This is a more than decent bottle of wine. It will be best with hearty food. Deep garnet purple color - Red fruit, floral - dark flowers, resin is the aroma profile. Medium bodied. It's a bit heavy handed though with substantial flinty tannins and deep notes of iron curtain mineral. The fruit is in the mix but mostly in the background. Finishes with mineral and red fruit and tannins. (3834 views)
Tasted by CCestaro on 11/18/2010 & rated 88 points: A nice inexpensive quaffer....full body....deep color....nose of blackberry and black cherry....oak is present on the palate....medium finish....not complex but a decent wine for the price....I'd say this is a great match with pizza or an italian sausage sub..... (4649 views)
Tasted by kenito799 on 11/15/2010 & rated 87 points: Very bright acidity with firm tannins, fresh dark fruit, some leather and licorice. Great QPR, great with food. (1811 views)

Terredora di Paolo

Producer website

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
