Pleasant acidity despite all the richness and weight. (1525 views) | | Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 4/15/2017: Not bad but somewhat mediocre. 13.5 alcohol (way into auslese must weight) like something like a Wittmann Morstein GG but without the palate weight and minerality. Has life and not hot or dirty but the imprecise profile suggests the ripeness got way ahead of the harvest and it isn't what it should be. I don't doubt that he wine was more difficult to manage when it was young, but more age won't help it further. Finish lingers a little but isn't potent. Okay to drink now. (1273 views) | | Tasted by robmatic on 4/5/2017 & rated 91 points: Fabulous. Steely acidity, and crunchy apples. Dry and minerally, finishes long and juicy. (1300 views) | | Tasted by Vino Me on 7/4/2016 & rated 91 points: Opened by Allred. 91 points. (1864 views) | | Tasted by AllRed on 7/4/2016 & rated 91 points: My last bottle and finally a good one. Youthful straw yellow in color with notes of peach, apple and petrol. Stone fruit and petrol on the palate with nice acidity and a good finish. (1760 views) | | Tasted by Vino Me on 11/1/2015 & rated 87 points: 2nd time I have had this wine with similar notes. 87 points (1208 views) | | Tasted by AllRed on 10/31/2015 & rated 89 points: I enjoyed this much more than the last bottle I opened a couple of years ago. Deep color with notes of petrol, wet stone and peach on the nose and palate. Could use just a touch more acidity I think, but enjoyable nonetheless. (1171 views) | | Tasted by dpolivy on 7/10/2015 & rated 90 points: Vindredi (Barcode (Bellevue, WA)): Light and pretty on first opening, with good floral notes. Rich and full bodied with minerals, clay, chalk, and citrus. Backbone of acidity keeps it fresh.
Showing its age a little more after being open for a day, the nose wasn't as attractive. Still nice, but I prefer it "fresh". (1599 views) | | Tasted by Vino Me on 5/8/2013 & rated 87 points: Opened by Allred. First wine I have had from this Rheingau estate. More yellow than I would expect from a 2005 at this age. Notes of lemon zest, wet stones and minerals. A dry wine with some tartness to it. Lush texture. Thought the balance was a little off. 87 points (1087 views) | | Tasted by AllRed on 4/27/2013 & rated 85 points: Fairly deep color. Stone fruit, apple and mineral qualities; a bit full but also seemed flat. Shortish finish. (1468 views) | | Tasted by lkatz on 5/21/2012 & rated 92 points: quite a nice bottle of reisling, which I dont drink that often...nice taste of tarte fruit but not overwhelming...really enjoyed with roast chicken and salad (1336 views) | | Tasted by WetRock on 2/22/2012: The nose really jumps out of the glass with bright ripe lime and rain hitting rocks. Dense fruit but never heavy. Gets tripped up in the mid palate and ends with a tart finish. That minerality doesn't seem to carry into the palate like you would guess. The chunky palate remained that way over night also so I wonder if it will integrate better. There is plenty of fruit and the acidity is adequate if not prominent so further aging should be just fine and might see an improvement. (1404 views) | | Tasted by Dr_Bob on 6/12/2011 & rated 94 points: Fabulous Tart acid, tight fruits Perfect complement to lobster tail with butter and tarragon Every bit as cool and interesting as rimmerman writes about High degree of interest in future bottlings! (1418 views) | | Tasted by curtispomeroy on 2/27/2010 & rated 88 points: Nice riesling, dryer in style. (1413 views) | | Tasted by LeechDogg on 3/14/2009 & rated 88 points: A little too full-bodied for a Riesling... probably has to do with how warm I served it. Nice wine notwithstanding, although maybe it saw partial MLF? Not too sweet- balanced with acid. (1031 views) |
| By Jancis Robinson, MW JancisRobinson.com (9/13/2006) (Schloss Reinhartshausen, Erbach Schlossberg Riesling Erstes Gewächs Rheingau White) Subscribe to see review text. | By Jon Rimmerman Garagiste (2/5/2008) (Erbacher Schloss REINHARTSHAUSEN) Erbacher Dear Friends, If the monopole aspect of Romanee Conti interests you, this grand old dame of the Rheingau is finally back and it took a vintage like 2005 to prove that terroir will win out in the end. Since the 1300’s, Schloss Reinhartshausen has produced wine from the vineyards around the Rhine and the prize in their arsenal is the 10+ acre Erbacher Schlossberg monopole. Never given much thought in the US, this wine has the pedigree reserved for Germany’s most famous wines. This wine is so allocated that only a few dozen cases are slated for the US (none for retail) and that’s one of the major reasons it has never received much fanfare - nobody has a bottle. I’ve been trying to obtain an allocation of this for the past decade and I finally received the call tonight - we have some. The Erbacher Schlossberg “Erstes Gewachs (First Growth)” is completely handpicked berry by berry – it is vinified like a garage project and the vineyard is treated with kid gloves. The wine itself is always made in a high Spatlese must weight (or even low Auslese) but with sweetness levels that are closer to low-level Kabinett. This high extract/low sugar ratio can be quite appealing and in a vintage like 2005 where the must weights and extract ratios were at an all-time high it played right into the hands of the Erbacher Schlossberg. The wine is a combination of so many elements that make German Riesling so special - citrus and stone, white skinned fruit and the exotic piquant elements of the Rheingau without the heaviness of true Auslese. The sweetness can be barely perceptible but the impact is high - very high. If you are into wine that few will ever see in this country, this wine (from a great vintage) should be on your short list. The quantities are so small, that I'll leave it at that. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY - 25 cases for the entire US 2005 Schloss Reinhartshausen “Erbacher Schlossberg” Erstes Gewachs (Grand Cru) (this is not the regular Spatlese or Auslese - this is the Grand Cru level wine above both of them) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Germ3722 | NOTE: Scores and reviews are the property of JancisRobinson.com and Garagiste.
