Tasted by kfk on 9/24/2023 & rated 89 points: A little past prime likely (264 views)
Tasted by Geccos on 12/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Al naso ancora una piacevole nota balsamico, con frutta sotto spirito, tannino evoluto in bocca una piacevole eleganza, purtroppo nella parabola è in fase calante. Ma una bella emozione (470 views)
Tasted by liber on 2/16/2022 & rated 95 points: 8th of 12, opened an hour, perfect level, dry cork which crumbled and pulled through and was a devil to remove leaving wine full of bits (what a pain!), even so wine was a step up on excellent bottle noted in Feb 20, youthful robe still, ever greater layering to nose and palate, grip, remarkably fresh and balanced given huge scale and depth to wine, upside yet, many years life ahead. VF (18.5). (887 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/25/2021 flawed bottle: 7th of 12, pnp, horribly dry and crumbly cork which pulled through......and corked as well!!! (993 views)
Tasted by liber on 2/26/2020 & rated 94 points: 6th of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect level but dryish cork quarter travelled, big step up since last bottle in 14, still youthful robe, much more fragrant and nuanced, long and with excellent energy on exit, black cherry, earth and balsamic and much more, hints at long life yet. At least F+ (18). (1578 views)
Tasted by Koen.michels@telenet.be on 12/24/2019: Na 3 uur open zijn alle taninnes verdwenen en wordt de wijn soepel en fluweelzacht in de mond met een lange stevige afdronk. Ronduit schitterend na 20 jaar (1410 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 2/20/2019 & rated 94 points: This wine has evolved wonderfully over the last 10 years...
Dark macerated fruit notes, tossed wet earth, bloody/gamey meat, charred moak and balsamico. At age 20, all components have melted into this beautiful beasty boy and those chewy but well dosed tannines provide great harmonious structure.
Well done!
Went super next to a plate of meatballs and ravioli. (1564 views)
Tasted by maxbld on 10/21/2017 & rated 93 points: Deep and thick red color. Beautiful nose of red fruits with black and red berries and leather afterwards. On the palate is like fireworks, intense cherry confiture, red fruits first then meat and all integrated in wonderful tannis. This guy has 18 years, but can age more, if you ask me, I would say it will reach 2020 in perfect shape. (2252 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 6/10/2015 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS #100; Jubllee tasting with dinner: Quite mature bouquet with autumn forest and dark berry flavors. Same on the palate, earth and dark fruits as well. Good acidity and slightly drying tannin. Beautiful wine and fully mature, but no real hurry. (4860 views)
Tasted by Biglama on 10/8/2014 & rated 95 points: super wijn, power, donker, veel kracht maar ook zo veel diepgang, heerlijk (5063 views)
Tasted by liber on 4/26/2014 & rated 91 points: 4th of 12, decanted one hour, good fill, consistent notes - deep opaque red, little development, intense whack of dusty black cherry, though some secondaries beginning to develop, very big and alcoholic, but not unbalanced, less monolithic than first couple of bottles and should gain more interest with time, impressive in its way! Very good indeed (17/20). (5545 views)
Tasted by Dapz on 4/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Ripe black currants and black cherry; milk chocolate, leather and a violets on the nose. High acid, tannins are still high but tamed at this point. Ripe black fruit on the palate, dark chocolate on the mid palate. The alcohol is high and it is spiking up at this point. It has a long tart cherry finish. The wine is very nice but it is still incredibly young. Would like to drink this in another 10 years. (6507 views)
Tasted by Roude Leiw on 4/22/2012 & rated 93 points: I think this wine has reached its summit . Just perfect (6505 views)
Tasted by AlphasCellar on 12/23/2011 & rated 92 points: Visual appearance: Dark dark red.
Nose: Complex and brooding, but not overpowering. Considerable oak with its typical coconut nose.
Palate: Complex and layered, but not quite as 'big' as expected. Dark fruit (but also some strawberry) and chocolate flavors. Oak presence continues here.
Good structure. Still lots of tannins left - well integrated by now, but presence very noticeable. Extended finish.

Bottle was decanted and aerated just before drinking. Probably could have used some more time to breathe.

In drinking window now, but will keep for at least 5-10 more years (although not sure it will improve much more). (4857 views)
Tasted by aknot13 on 12/17/2011 & rated 92 points: Very nice! Not as tannic as I would have expected. Still has many years left. (3941 views)
Tasted by Henman on 4/28/2011 & rated 91 points: Decanted over one hour.Developed nose giving some chocolaty and oaky notes.Medium bodied palate showing firm and smooth tannins with nice secondaries/tertiaries.In the forefront chocolate, discreet oak, some herbs.Nice dark fruit left as well.Overall nicely developed, balanced and smooth.Drinking nicely now but should have many years ahead. (3896 views)
Tasted by cooberp on 4/1/2011: Excellent bottle that was the consensus favorite in a flight with two strong 1999 Brunellos. Prominent but integrated coconut-flavored oak. Soft. Didn't take detailed notes so no score. (3672 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 8/31/2009 & rated 91 points: Very dark red with ruby hues. Nose reminds of leather, blackberry, mediterranean herbs, juniper. Very tannic mouth. Nice and typical. (2008-2018) (3282 views)
 Tasted by Ludi on 5/5/2009 & rated 92 points: (2007-2020) (3279 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 1/14/2007: OK, but way out-classed by Bea. A good succulent acidic core, but marred with extraction and roasted notes. Very loose. OK w/ an Umbrian-style roasted lamb and lentils, but ultimately neither good nor interesting. (4014 views)
Tasted by freek on 1/16/2006 & rated 95 points: Fantastische wijn. Jeugdig, zeer veel fruit die perfect is geintegreerd met de tannines. Nog een lang leven voor zich! (5049 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 6/23/2004 & rated 94 points: Caramel and butter nose; violet, spicy, plum palate with good acidity; medium-plus finish (2556 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 5/16/2003 & rated 93 points: WS: Great wine flavored nose! Huge soft t’s. (1894 views)

Arnaldo-Caprai

Producer website The Caprai winery and vineyards lie on the hillside below the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo-Caprai Caprai, and now in the hands of his son Marco, the estate has become the leading producer of Sagrantino wines in the region. Sagrantino shows no resemblance to any of Italy's other grape varieties, and is almost exclusive to the region of Montefalco - it is thick-skinned, small bunched and small-berried, but big in every other way: colour, tannins, acids, extracts, and sugars.

Sagrantino

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sagrantino is an Italian grape variety that is indigenous to the region of Umbria in Central Italy, and makes some of that region's most distinctive wines.

It is grown primarily in the village of Montefalco and its surrounding areas, with only 250 acres (1.0 km2) dedicated to the grape in the hands of about 25 producers. With such small production, the wine is not widely known outside of Italy, even though it was granted DOCG status in 1991.

The origins of the grape are widely disputed, but what is known is that it was used primarily for dessert wines for many years, the grape being dried in the passito style, much like a Recioto di Valpolicella. At some point, the wines were made in a dry style, and that is how they are primarily produced today.

The grape is one of the most tannic varieties in the world, and creates wines that are inky purple with an almost-black center. The bouquet is one of dark, brooding red fruits with hints of plum, cinnamon, and earth.

The Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG requires 100 percent sagrantino used, with a required 29 months aging before release. Sagrantino is of excellent storability.

A more approachable and affordable Montefalco Rosso usually contains only 10-15% sagrantino and allows up to 70 percent sangiovese and other grapes in the blend.

A passito is still made, a thick, syrupy wine with raisin and blueberry qualities. The alcohol content is around 14 percent.
