Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 31 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Fleets on 5/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Lovely mature Roussanne. Looks like a mature sherry in the glass but definitely not over the hill or oxidised on the nose or palate. Chilled to around 8 degrees and enjoyed by everyone at lunch. (299 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/12/2023: ESTG does Southern Rhone and Provence (Seattle, WA, USA): Deep color. By all accounts this was likely oxidized, but I appreciated how nutty and round it was on the palate. Mature Roussane. (974 views)
(1313 views)
Tasted by cjn01 on 1/19/2017 & rated 91 points: Such refinement and balance after 15 years. I thought this would be past it but ts still a lovely wine. (2352 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 2/3/2016: Much more evolved on the nose, but the palate is still pretty slamming. Orange rind, frost, honey comb. Not quite as wooly as the 2005 Tablas Esprit Blanc. Silkier texture. (3042 views)
Tasted by Lord Rayas on 12/31/2011 & rated 88 points: NYE dinner with Julian/Ada, Brian/Ling, Thomas (Amber): very deep yellow, pleasant notes of honeysuckle but a little tired and oxidised. (5644 views)
Tasted by mhurford on 12/29/2010 flawed bottle: oxidation becoming very pronounced (5147 views)
Tasted by bluedog on 7/5/2010 & rated 90 points: A little past it's prime, but still interesting and good. Golden, A little oxidized, heavy cream. (4658 views)
Tasted by drvet11 on 11/14/2009 & rated 91 points: Great bottle...no hint of oxidation at all. Very fresh with honey and caramel flavors (3984 views)
Tasted by ldorf on 10/16/2009 & rated 92 points: Perfect. (2600 views)
Tasted by mhurford on 5/18/2009 & rated 88 points: Past its best now with a sherried oxidative hint and fading fruit. However, still enjoyable (2043 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 6/14/2008 & rated 92 points: PTA Wine Tasting; 6/14/2008-6/15/2008 (Our House - Minnesota): Opened for PTA wine tasting. A hint of oxidization, though not at all unpleasant....yet. I would drink sooner than later. Update: the only white to be completely drained. The favorite of many! (2915 views)
Tasted by Whistler on 6/5/2008 flawed bottle: We ploughed our way through most of a case over three weeks while I had my folks in town as this clearly needs drinking. At best this is on the turn yet some bottles were oxidised. For the bottles that were in good condition, this is a pleasant, well balanced wine, large initially on the palate but no so much in terms of the length. Ripe, honey notes, buttery. (2189 views)
Tasted by plitton on 6/4/2008 flawed bottle: Oxidized. First of three bottles. (2413 views)
Tasted by yahnbernier on 5/28/2008 & rated 90 points: A bit past it's prime. Seemed very Riesling like in initial nose. Mellowed out almost too much. More drinkable over time (2457 views)
Tasted by bluedog on 4/6/2008 & rated 90 points: Medium yellow amber. Heavy wine, many layers, almonds, creme brulee, very good. (2442 views)
Tasted by winelovr2001 on 4/3/2008 flawed bottle: This bottle was slightly corked. I have had this wine before, and it was a tad oxidized. This wine showed the same oxidation, but it was further marred by a slight corkiness. (2334 views)
Tasted by mhurford on 3/24/2008 & rated 90 points: Nose of peaches. Fresh acidity well balanced. Long finish - very pleasant albeit highly distinctivity. (2460 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 3/2/2008 & rated 90 points: 3/2008 Housecleaning: Like the bottle earlier this evening (2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes), this one needs to be consumed sooner than later. All around, a brighter wine with more fruit and less negatively impacted by age. But this doesn't appear to be one that will last a lot longer. (2900 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 1/22/2008 & rated 90 points: Seattle Round 2: Rhone vs. Rhone Ranger (Seattle, WA): Deep yellow in color. The nose has honey, dried apricot, and some sherried components to it. Good full oily mouth feel. Lemon custard-like. Must be in that oxidative phase typical of white Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This didn't detract from the wine for me and I rather enjoyed it. (3305 views)
Tasted by WST on 7/19/2007 & rated 90 points: Bright yellow-gold. Intense nose of white fruit, citrus and floral tones. Rich palate, with just the right acidity. Buy again-yes. (2655 views)
Tasted by beaunehead on 7/15/2007 & rated 91 points: Dark yellow-amber in color, very rich. Started off nutty and hinting at oxidation, but that gave way after a few minutes of air to reveal a complex wine, loaded to the gills with vanilla, creme brulee, honeyed toast, clove and allspice notes, heavy and viscous. Serious wine, not for the timid, nor the Chardonnay lover. Unusual and very exciting. (2704 views)
Tasted by WST on 5/24/2007 & rated 90 points: Bright yellow-amber. Intense nose of nectarine and lemon, with floral tones. Rich palate, with just the right acidity. This was a steal on auction for $25. This makes the case for finding fine wines from off years. (2757 views)
Tasted by willison on 11/23/2006 & rated 88 points: Golden color, apricot, honey, and asian spice, heat noticable at first, and then blows off after being open a while...an interesting wine. (2902 views)
Tasted by futronic on 2/17/2005 & rated 88 points: Pale-medium gold colour. Aromas of spice, honey, ginger snap, cream, tropical fruit. Medium-full bodied with white and tropical fruit. Moderate-long finish, 35-40s. Delicious. (3013 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
