Tasted by molarchae on 6/30/2021: Damn this is good.
Myriad berry aromas and flavours come to the party and a nice long finish that includes things like black tea and herbs. Its core stayed the same over 2 nights but the specifics changed hour by hour. Another great Twisted wine! (525 views)
Tasted by klezman on 7/26/2016: Delicious! Big but balanced, meaty, tons of bramble fruit, and full of savoury notes. Enjoyed every bottle of this so far and this is no exception. (2994 views)
Tasted by foobarski on 5/21/2016 & rated 90 points: My last bottle, and it's going out on a very high note. Still a massively bright cedar-y nose, still rich, spicy and fruit-filled on the tongue. (1907 views)
Tasted by foobarski on 1/9/2016 & rated 90 points: Consistent with my notes from over two years ago. Massively cedar-riffic on opening/decanting/pouring. Big, meaty and satisfying. (2070 views)
Tasted by HitAnyKey on 4/5/2015 & rated 90 points: Wonderful deep fruit with complex spice. Perfect with grilled lamb steaks. (2400 views)
Tasted by klezman on 9/11/2014: Awkward at first but opened up into the expected awesomeness. (3630 views)
Tasted by klezman on 2/28/2014: So good, and in a great place right now. Blackberry, spice, deliciousness. (2716 views)
Tasted by ucbeau on 1/9/2014 & rated 89 points: Drank a bottle last night, showing beautifully. It's in a great place as far as aging goes. Plenty of dark, dense black fruit, black pepper, cocoa, all enveloped by thick tannin and acidity. Yet, all of that was in harmony, resulting in an idea combination of concentration and flavor integration. A long finish completed things. (1613 views)
Tasted by KyleMittskus on 12/1/2013: This seemed a little closed down at this point. It may be dumb, may have just been a poor showing, but it seemed a little thin and a little under ripe. (1575 views)
Tasted by foobarski on 10/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Delightfully complex, spicy nose. Deep rich fruit, mellow tannins. A lovely wine. (1210 views)
Tasted by klezman on 3/28/2013: This seems to be getting better and better. Not at all surprising, given it's now 5.5 years out from vintage. This bottle seemed lighter on its feet than previous ones and significantly more in balance. There was a hint of vegetal flavour behind the core of bright perfectly ripe blackberry fruit. Surprisingly light bodies for a PS, and even compared to previous bottles of this PS. The depth of colour and intensity of flavour, though, are right where they should be. Second half of the bottle was recorked and stored away until day 2.

Day 2 the tannin has picked up significantly from the previous day, but the flavours have matured and opened up significantly. Amazing stuff, as usual. (1935 views)
Tasted by dbcomposer on 3/23/2013 & rated 87 points: Big, fat, slow legs and inky purple. Black cherry, oak, vanilla, and leather on the nose. Dark fruit on the palate. Abrasive tannins on night one, but opened up nicely for night two. Could definitely be cellared for a couple more years. (1165 views)
Tasted by ny pete on 1/3/2013: aromatics of dark fruits, leather, cloves and a touch of vanilla.
the palate is a lively combination of plums and dark berries.
a long lingering finish adds to the enjoyment of this bottle.
an outstanding PS at a very nice price point. (2376 views)
Tasted by BuffaloLou on 11/5/2012 & rated 84 points: This is, thus far, the best TO wine I’ve had, which isn’t saying much. I had another bottle of the same. It was not as good. (Again, not saying much… ) This bottle is mostly acid with a lot of oak influenced characteristics. The nose is an oaky-plum with a lot of sweetness. The palate is an unbalanced mess. (1355 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 8/29/2012 & rated 88 points: Dark purple with a bright ruby edge. Black cherry, leather, and cinnamon spice nose. Full bodied, blueberries, blackberries, pepper, woody tannins, smoke, a bit of heat, and a medium to long finish. This needed time. On the first night, it was rough and unbalanced. But 2 days later (vacu-vined and sitting on the counter), it was much much better. (1565 views)
Tasted by BuffaloLou on 6/29/2012 & rated 83 points: Disappointing. Little fruit and little else. Some dark fruit on the palate, but nothing exceptional. Some oak effects like vanilla, but again, nothing remarkable. Muted nose. "Meh". (1393 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 12/15/2011: Popped and poured, consumed over 4 hours. Didn't take detailed notes general impressions were dark PS characteristics but generally not nuanced with a little hint of alcohol. Meh. (2004 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 9/15/2011 & rated 87 points: Opaque magenta. Blueberry and vanilla nose. Full bodied, plums, tart blackberries, pepper, dry tannins, good acid, a bit of heat, and a long gritty finish. Not as pleasant as I'd expect; maybe it's still too young. (2007 views)
Tasted by JJHACamp on 9/9/2011 & rated 89 points: dark berries..hint of oak..great buy from wine woot...will definitely buy again (2099 views)
Tasted by mncellar on 6/25/2011 & rated 89 points: Thick, deep, rich berry, nice tannins, chewy. A very nice PS for the price! (2524 views)
Tasted by TowerCellar on 6/18/2011 & rated 86 points: Decanted.
Initial smell: Deep, rich, dark fruit. Alcohol at the back.
Initial taste: Tart berries at the beginning. Fresh blackberry ending.
Smell 45 min: Darker fruit smell has moved down, with a lighter berry that's light and on top. There is leather at the end. Heat has died down.
Taste 45 min: Tartness has mostly gone to the edges. Middle is fairly light, finishing with a some heat and a bit of acid. Good balance, but too more alcohol than I would prefer. It's not a fruit bomb, yet fruit is definitely the controlling element. (2630 views)
Tasted by michaelflynnca on 5/24/2011: Consistent with prior note. A bit more tartness and heat on this bottle - the remainder is in the decanter now. (2675 views)
Tasted by BlackIce on 4/27/2011 & rated 89 points: Consistent with prior notes. Very good and yummy. (2701 views)
Tasted by TowerCellar on 4/15/2011 & rated 86 points: Pop and pour. Will be reviewing this again with a decanter.
Taste: Heavy black fruit at the start. Very much like a plum, with tart edge. Center has a bit of leather, but the wine has a balanced, mellow overall feel to it. There is a bit of acid and heat at the end.
Smell: Fruit is a bit muted in power, but it's still very present. A very small hint of alcohol at the end. (2982 views)
Tasted by Oakjeff on 4/5/2011 & rated 90 points: Almost as opaque as a PS can get. Thick & chewy with notes of blackberries & licorice. There is a slight hollowness on the mid-palate. The tannins are so thick & teeth staining that I will likely need to scrape my teeth rather than merely brush them before going to bed. (2918 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
