Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rahul_d_chatter@yahoo.com on 4/11/2018 & rated 90 points: Beautiful wine! Aroma of dark cherries, strawberries, tobacco, and anise. The color was a dark garnet. I was a little worried that this wine would be past its prime, but was I wrong! This wine is singing beautifully. I passed it through the aerator and decanted for an hour.

This is a classic example of a Barbera wine. It has the color and medium body feel of a powerful wine. Yet has soft berry flavors, herbaceous notes, rounded of with a backbone of tobacco and leather. This makes Barbera wines so versatile to drink. It pairs with many different kind of foods and can be imbibed though all seasons. We had it with pork cooked in milk and the wine did not overpower the meat. This wine, like the best of the Barberas, has the elegance and power of a resolute woman. Enjoy it! (2210 views)
Tasted by BVal on 9/10/2017 & rated 89 points: Color: medium-deep/dark ruby core -> medium ruby/garnet rim. Nose on PnP was screeching tire rubber, smoke and some black cherries; waited a full 90 minutes before the acrid elements finally began to recede to the point where it was drinkable. Rustic palate showing black fruits, earth, smoke and more earth. Full bodied but a bit astringent with a moderately long finish. Not my favourite vintage of dell'Uccellone for sure; perhaps a bit too scortchingly hot in '07 to make a great wine. (2506 views)
Tasted by Johnny C NYC on 10/16/2013 & rated 89 points: Big and friendly; no earth-shattering complexity, but some nice planes of flavor if a slightly metallic aspect. 50/5/12/14/8 (6131 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 7/27/2013 & rated 90 points: delicious - nice and tangy barbera with lots of character. It is deep in colour and complex on the nose, shows nice herbal, ink, tar notes along with the cherry and berry fruit. Palate is similar, juicy with low tannins but zingy acidity and a good depth of flavour. Long finish. (6043 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 7/19/2013 & rated 90 points: Very juicy and rich. Concentrated without overdoing it. Tangy acidity keeps the fruit in check. Better, to my taste, than critics suggest. (6034 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 3/9/2013 & rated 87 points: Very deeply colored. Light aromas. Initial tastes of thick fruit. Maybe a little overdone? Good mouthfeel. No pronounced heat from the alcohol level. Typical acidity was far in the background. This bottle drank well, despite not being in our preferred style. (5249 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 3/3/2013 & rated 90 points: Solid berry and leather notes but perhaps at or near the end of its lifetime. Was not any better second night. A lot of sediment in the last glass. (4891 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 1/27/2013 & rated 88 points: darker and more elegant that you normally would expect from a quality Barbera - however inferior to my memories from tasting this wine at the winery and from other great Barbera like that of Giacomo Conterno or Robertop Voerzio.
dark fruit, some mineral and hints of pencil notes. very fruity still but lost some of its young character.
although quite expensive - doesn't offer a value for money. (1911 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 11/27/2012 & rated 88 points: Smoky, raspberry nose with sour plum, smoke and saddle notes on the palate. Seemed to be approaching its zenith. In fact just a tad disappointing. Given the almost searing acidity in the wine, it begs a red sauce or big piece of meat. (1986 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 5/25/2012 & rated 86 points: Disappointing. To much acid and not entirely balanced. Will hold the other bofttle for a while (2672 views)
Tasted by drkelly on 4/4/2012 & rated 93 points: This is an very beautiful wine, we opened it up about 30 min prior to dinner and was expecting a very tight closed off bouquet, but was completely stunned by the beautiful complex aromas in the glass bright red fruits with notes of caramel and a tiny bit of that dark muddy water smell that so typical of big Italian wines.

And then thing just got better from there. Our dinners were wildly varried from a heavy bolognese sauce to picata but the wine paired brilliantly with all. And after the entree's were finished we all sat back and marveled at the fact that the wine was as enjoyable without food, as it was with. (2557 views)
Tasted by grayfont on 11/5/2011 & rated 92 points: decanted 2 hours and served with (unbreaded) chicken parmesan. This wine performed the double trick of standing up to the marinara sauce and being quite elegant at the same time. A perfect food pairing for anything with tomato sauce. This has a strong and edgy front with a bit of pepper/spice on the palate but the finish is soft, long, and smooth. Lovely wine. (3400 views)

Tasted by tonifad on 9/30/2011 & rated 91 points: Much more elegant that you normally would think of when drinking a barbera. Layers of dark fruit, mineral and pencil notes. Mouthfilling. Very, very long. It is a barbera in the Vietti La Crena/Scarrone, Altare’s Larigi, and Coppo’s Pomorosso mold, and although on the expensive side, way cheaper than, say, Voerzio’s Barbera d’Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell’Annunziata. This can easily be cellared and drunk at 10 years of age, but it provides tons of pleasure also at a young age. If the 07 is hard to come by, the 09 should be a good alternative. News’ already out that Gambero Rosso has awarded the 09 3 glasses (Tre Bicchieri) in their 2012 edition. http://bit.ly/pHCIbE (2823 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 4/25/2011 & rated 90 points: I must say I enjoyed this wine quite a bit. Italian for sure but also modern. Dark red trending to purple. Nose is a bit muted, some alcohol and grape must. Flavors are very juicy berry at first with very fine and moderate tannins, chocolate and anise background notes. After a couple of hours the berries integrate to show more secondary notes of fir, dark chocolate and evergreen. (3082 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 4/16/2011 & rated 93 points: Nose - sweet oak, cranberry
mouth - lush mouthfeel, light red fruits leaning more to cranberry than anything else, almost delicious in a fruit punchy way, with good acidity and substantial tannins. I am surprised at how deliciously fruit forward this is. Perhaps my best barbera to date. (3129 views)
Tasted by goobz on 4/15/2011 & rated 92 points: Excellent food wine. Deep for a Barbera with notes of forest floor blended with dark red fruit. This is a deep, complex wine. Loved it. (3235 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 3/17/2011 & rated 90 points: Barbera and Pizza on St. Patty's Day (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): bright purple color in the glass. bright raspberries and a hint of mint on the nose. full bodied with lots of acid. lively black cherries, and a hint of tobacco on the finish. what a gorgeous wine. i'm not even being generous with the 90 pt score. could be a 91-92 in a year or two the stuffing in here comes out, which i'm sure it will.  Tasted by manonthemoon on 3/17/2011 & rated 89 points: Nose of dark fruit.
Palate of dark fruit, olive, pepper, and some tannin. (3253 views)
Tasted by tooch on 3/17/2011 & rated 91 points: St. Patty's Day Barbera & Birthday Celebration (Weygandt Wines, Cleveland Park, Washington D.C.): Definitely the class of the Barbera d'Asti this evening. The nose had more earth-driven tones; soot, brambles, dried rose florals, and cassis. Very classic, refined, and elegant nose. The palate was gorgeous too with drying tannins, a deep potpourri elegance, and focused cassis flavors. (4006 views)
Tasted by admid on 5/10/2010 & rated 93 points: Black purple
Aroma: Integrated oak character and black berries.
Full bodied and intense, but smooth and delicate. Very good balance and structure.
Very good length (3818 views)

Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.
