Tasted by Ace5glassesinthesky on 12/30/2016 & rated 88 points: Great herby oaky nose. Still dark fruit taste, decent tannin and acidity. Not dead (4015 views)
Tasted by thirsty_cat on 2/28/2015 & rated 91 points: Nose: blueberry and raspberry jam, seasoned cedar wood, vanilla bean, hint of eucalyptus, black pepper. Very fruit forward nose; attractive but not a big nose at all. Taste: dry, medium body, very fruit-driven. Blackberry all day, plus some black currant, ripe juicy black plum, fig. On the mid palate a nice hint of pine needle and pine gum, willow bark, and vanilla pull through. Nice dry tannins round out the finish - black tea. Excellent, a crowd pleaser and definitely aged well. has the blackberry profile I like. 91. (6948 views)
Tasted by Pitbozz on 10/24/2014 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed this bottle very much... Beautiful dark berries with a lengthy finish and excellent balance. The tannins have smoothed out quite nicely and this vintage is in the prime of the drinking window. Could go another 3-5 years, but I would enjoy it now. Excellent QPV (7535 views)
Tasted by winolee on 4/8/2013 & rated 88 points: Will be an instant crowd pleaser, albeit high in alcohol content. Chewy, dark fruits, chocolate. (8294 views)
Tasted by Kento61 on 3/12/2013 & rated 90 points: Drinking very well right now. Juicy, med. to full body. Excellent with heavier beef dishes. Not overly dry like some Spanish reds may show. (10549 views)
Tasted by mechoui on 12/31/2012 & rated 88 points: Liked it, pretty intense wine. Fruit bomb. Was much better and smoother after being opened 3-4 hours. Will wait at least 3 years to open the next bottle. (8109 views)

Tasted by YWG Wine Guy on 4/14/2012 & rated 88 points: As per my last and the other recent ones - heavy hitter with fruit and tonight i'm getting lots of oak related notes - ashtray comes to mind...Needs some summer BBQ to be enjoyed at its prime. Otherwise be sure to serve 1-2 degrees cool and decant/air out for a good 60 mins.

The '09 is on the shelf and will try. (6406 views)
Tasted by RandyC on 4/7/2012 & rated 89 points: Notes of ashtray and oak on the nose (in a bit of a disjointed but strangely appealing combination). In the mouth this wine explodes with blackberry and sugar thoughtout. A fruitbomb by any standards. This wine will get much traction at parties as it is delicious yet with some structure to cater to all but those that detest the heavily extracted type. (3697 views)
Tasted by AIB on 4/1/2012 & rated 90 points: Still enjoyed this wine. Nice ruby colour and good fruit. Worked well with short ribs. (3230 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 3/10/2012 & rated 85 points: Enjoyable wine for the price. Nice soft cherry & berry tastes. (1315 views)
Tasted by Alain Harvey on 3/4/2012 & rated 88 points: This wine possesses a cherry color. There is a light nose, more lifted berries, and gritty toast notes. There is similar intensity with more blue fruit and some creaminess to the texture. The finish falls off some with dark toast flavors coming through and a small amount of light tannins.

Personal Background Notes

Jumilla is a DO located in the southeast portion of Spain. It is characterized by wide valleys and plains and surrounded by mountains. It is very dry with only 300mm of erratic rain per year and hot temperatures of 104 F during the summer. These conditions produce wines of naturally high alcohol levels. Jumilla is one of the most unique wine growing regions I’ve visited in my travels. A very quiet, dusty place full of very old vines. The potential to make consistent, excellent wines is here, but sometimes the wines can taste ‘baked’ or ‘pruney’ if growers aren’t careful.

This estate started in 1916 when Juan Gil Gimenez built a winery in Jumilla. The grandsons Juan Gil Gonzalez and Paco have worked to bring technical advances to the estate. They have recently completed a new winery that is fully temperature controlled and located in the middle of the estate. There are 350 hectares of vineyards that lie between 700 and 850 meters. The winery sits in a 120 hectare parcel with their remaining 230 hectares scattered about. All parcels are located in Termino de Arriba. The majority of the vineyards are planted with Monastrell but Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are planted as well.

The vineyards are not irrigated. The soils very greatly so the grapes are vinified separately then blended at the end. The Silver Label wine is 100% Monastrell from 40-year old vines. These parcels have soils that are shallow, chalky and on top of limestone and rock. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Based on my limited experience and this current bottle, I believe this wine is worth trying out as a modern, but still somewhat coarse and gutsty, style wine from Jumilla. (3226 views)
Tasted by AIB on 3/1/2012 & rated 90 points: I have not popped a bottle of this one for more than a year. When I originally bought it it came with a high recommendation and I was unimpressed. I opened one tonight as it was teh first thing I grabbed and was pleasantly surprised. It had nice vanilla notes, mixed with tobacco and cherry. Deep purple color and a nice finish. I have one bottle left - hopefully it will be as good as the one I just had. (3231 views)
Tasted by greenwalter on 1/14/2012 & rated 90 points: You've got to appreciate the style, but if you do, it's done quite well. Very modern, sweet fruit. But it has spice and is quite well balanced. You'd never guess the ABV. A little disjointed on the midpalate. (3834 views)
Tasted by Tarrant on 1/5/2012 & rated 90 points: Very nice, amazing cherry/raspberry sensation, very tasty - Dark, full bodied with a nose of cherry, raspberry, chocolate, spice and vanilla, well structured, balanced and complex, sour, smooth on the palate with excellent length, nice! (90 Points). (4094 views)
Tasted by EaglesWin on 12/10/2011 & rated 91 points: Dringin beautifully right now. (4809 views)
Tasted by YWG Wine Guy on 11/21/2011 & rated 88 points: Per my last note - same experience - bought based on some recent awards and stuck one in the shelf for next year. (4843 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 11/16/2011 & rated 90 points: consistently excellent value, I always serve Juan Gil at parties and no one has not loved it. Best value for red (5030 views)
Tasted by jlangley on 11/8/2011 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1-2 hours and it really opened up to complex aromas and flavors. (4957 views)

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Murcia

Located in Southeastern Spain, the "lost" region of Yecla lies to the east of Jumilla and to the west of Alicante. Fortunately, this region was spared much of the wrath of the phylloxera plague, and many ungrafted and extremely old vines remain. The Yecla region’s progressive leader, Bodegas Castaño, has long been an advocate of the Monastrell varietal, also known as Mourvèdre. The varietal is best regarded for its influence on the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the terroir and climate is not dissimilar to that of Yecla. Both benefit from a very warm, Mediterranean climate with warm days and nights.
