Tasted by vinodolphin on 4/19/2013 & rated 91 points: Opened for a Siblings get together but only Ruth and I enjoyed. Their loss; we really like it. (1753 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 9/19/2012 & rated 91 points: Wow, another great showing. Smooth and taste. Opened up much quicker. Great QPR (2224 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 6/28/2012 & rated 92 points: Another 2 day wine that was enjoyed by all. Don't miss a chance to get some of this. (1345 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 4/2/2012 & rated 92 points: I tried to rush this one with a quick run through the venturi. Totally closed. I gave Ruth a taste and she said that she was going to drink white; her way of saying that she didn't care for it. By the end of the meal it had opened up and was wonderful. Bright red fruit so soft and smooth that I really thought I was drinking a much more expensive bottle. Ruth took another taste and agreed. I vacuum sealed for the night and tasted again today with some crackers and cheese. It was even better. I wish I had more than 5 left! (885 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 12/14/2010: {screwcap, 13.5%} Youthful nose of liquorice, sweet earth and a chicory/tobacco note. The palate has a slight tarry flavour as well, although remains savoury throughout. Unobtrusive acid and barely-detectable dusty tannin frame it as something of a fruit-bomb, but as it avoids overtly sweet flavours and alcoholic heat it works pretty well. Medium-bodied (at least), with a medium-length finish, it ought to do well for a couple of years but that’s all. Suggests tempranillo ought to find a happy home in parts of Australia. (2007 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 7/25/2010 & rated 91 points: Colour a combination of purple and black, if that makes sense. Can't quite pin down the nose, reminds me a little of a sweet rhubarb and apple crumble, also toffee apple, though there's more there too. Palate of strawberry conserve, with small hints of beef jerky, cinnamon, nutmeg, and liquorice root. Lovely full bodied silky smooth textured tanins, almost creamy. Sensational pairing for Greek style lemon and oregano roast lamb, if I was scoring the combination rather than the wine alone, it'd be mid 90s or higher. Just as good on second night, with liquorice root coming out more, especially on the finish. (2145 views)

Tempranillo

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The varietal is at its best in top Riojas, where oak aging is employed to generate increased complexity and harmony. From the best sites, these wines can be remarkably concentrated with great aging potential. New wines from this region are darker, and more robust, with more dynamic primary fruit flavors than traditionally styled examples. These wines seem to reflect the influence of Spain's other key region for Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero. Regardless of style, Riojas tend to be medium bodied wines, with more acid than tannins. These wines generally feature Tempranillo blended with Garancha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. For these wines, there are three quality levels, which will appear on the label. Everyday drinking wines fall under the category of "Crianza", "Reserva" denotes more complex and concentrated wines, and "Gran Reserva" refers to the most intense wines, made only in the best years.

The same labeling scheme applies to wines from Ribera del Duero, which, like Rioja, is dominated by Tempranillo and shares similar blending grapes. Again, Ribera del Duero wines are generally darker and more powerful than the most traditional Riojas. These wines also generally see less oak treatment than Riojas. From Rioja, we like wines from Allende, Marqués de Cáceres, Montecillo, and Cune. In Ribera del Duero, consider Dominio de Pingus, Emilio Moro, Convento San Francisco, and Pesquera.
Pair older-style Rioja with simple meats like chicken, leg of lamb, and pork loin. However, the newer style of Rioja and Ribera del Duero works especially well with bolder meat dishes or an aged Spanish cheese like Manchego or Idiazabal.
