Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 19 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by colinscellar on 1/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Strong blackcurrant flavours with some riper blueberry and rich chocolate.

The '08 Coppermine Rd has been a very inconsistent wine in my experience but this bottle is excellent. (885 views)
Tasted by colinscellar on 10/16/2021 & rated 91 points: Similar to Praxis' comment, there was initially something unpleasant and reminiscent of TCA despite the screwcap, I guess a different bacteria? But after ignoring the wine for ~4hrs whatever had been wrong had blown off (not decanted per se, but bottle left open with a glass poured to make room for air).

Fruit receding but still some ripe blackberry and slightly stewed plum, though the dominant character for me was a rich chocolate/mocha with some sweet oak vanilla behind it. Powdery tannins and acidity holding everything together.

So initially disappointing but actually very good after the long wait. (930 views)
Tasted by Praxis on 10/24/2019 flawed bottle: Dark and glass-staining reddish black in appearance is somewhat reminiscent of slightly diluted blood. The nose of this 11 year-old Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon is quite restrained with notes of thick stewed fruits, cooked meat and a bit of greenishness. The palate is rich, unctuous, medium full-bodied with flavors of rich but mildly savory red and blue fruits, meat, spices, and soil towards the finish. I think this is an off bottle despite the screw cap?, if not it is certainly drinking at the latter end of its drinking window. (2427 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 8/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Good structure and balance with fine tannins and integrated acidity. Blackcurrant, cloves, tobacco on the palate. This still has room to improve, though is fine drinking right now. (1878 views)
Tasted by bsycheng80hk on 12/31/2017 & rated 91 points: 3 hr decant, Black fruit, quite oaky vanilla and slight coconut, some tannin to resolve, quite high acid for an Aussie wine, good concentration and long savory finish, expect quite a bit of upside from here, 91-94 (2264 views)
Tasted by Bluespolo on 9/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Colore rubino scuro impenetrabile.
(1977 views)
Tasted by AnonymousCoward on 2/12/2017 & rated 90 points: Cassis, dark berries, mint, a touch of vanillin oak and cigar box. The palate has smooth tannins, with a rich, luscious dark fruit finish, with only some spice starting to come through now. Loads of sediment - beware! (1787 views)
Tasted by AnonymousCoward on 8/29/2016 & rated 91 points: Similar to previous note. Drunk over two nights. The nose is of cassis and dark fruits, with a hint of smokiness. Palate has dark fruits, but with undertones of spice and chocolate. Tannins are medium. (1799 views)
Tasted by AnonymousCoward on 8/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Cassis notes. The flavour is still of huge dark fruits, but with undertones of spice and chocolate. Tannins are medium - slightly grippy. Not sure how this is going to evolve- unlike other Coppermine Roads I've had, but a nice change from drinking dusty-boot cabernet, and raw under-developed stuff. (1507 views)
Tasted by Ivan Ma on 8/26/2014 & rated 88 points: Deep ruby color. Rich cassis, cheddar and hints of dry leafs on nose. Ripe and full body. Massive sweet dark fruits, cheddar and oak on palate. Nice finish. (2240 views)
Tasted by mchiew on 11/18/2013 & rated 90 points: nose of plum, spice, and hint of floral.

medium length, fine tannin and long finishing. pretty well made. (2376 views)
Tasted by danp on 12/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Lots of dark fruit on the nose, some vanilla and spice – clove and star anise. On the palate some sweet blackcurrant at first but then mouth puckering tannins and moderately high acidity kick in, which makes it a little hard work. I had this before at a tasting and it was much mellower. I suspect this one could take quite some time to come around. (3105 views)
Tasted by danp on 9/4/2012 & rated 92 points: Aromas of plum, blackcurrant, olives, which come through on the palate with some sweetness. Long finish. Powerful stuff. (2839 views)

One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale founded in 1912. The winemaking processes of the past have been maintained, capturing the unique small-batch character of the wines and the true flavour of the McLaren Vale region. All grapes, red and white, are basket-pressed. The reds are still traditionally fermented with the grape skins (caps) submerged in open wax-lined concrete fermenters utilising the age-old technique of foot-treading.

Winemaking duties are carried out by fourth-generation Chester d’Arenberg Osborn. In June 2004 Chester’s father, d’Arry was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his contributions to the wine industry and to the McLaren Vale region. After more than 65 consecutive vintages d’Arry is very proud of his achievements in creating an internationally recognised wine brand commonly known as the ‘Red Stripe’ due to the distinctive diagonal red stripe that adorns the label. d’Arenberg’s art of being different extends to a range of fortified and dessert wines, which have legendary status worldwide.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
