Community Tasting Notes (average 93.6 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 187 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by GilmoroDelToro on 2/21/2024 & rated 92 points: Initial aromas of earth and undergrowth and game. Mellows out to leather and herbs. Rich and luscious mouth feel, with loads of black pepper bite at the end. Alcohol is apparent, but in nice tension with the bright acidity and smooth but grippy tannins. It's a big wine, but not a bruiser or even overtly fruity. Actually feels pretty restrained. There's blackberry and boysenberry on the palate, and some dried plum. Herbs and roasted meats. Bit of flint and graphite. Prominent garrigue - rosemary and juniper. There's fruit but it's secondary to the earthy, savory, herbaceous notes. Delicious stuff. Had it with bavette and bearnaise, duck fat roasted potatoes with rosemary, and an arugula salad with anchovy vinaigrette. Wonderful! (554 views)
Tasted by kenv on 10/5/2023 & rated 92 points: WCC Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blind Dinner (The Chef's Table in Café Capriccio, Albany, NY): [Double-decanted around noon. Bottle left uncorked until 4:30 pm.] Muted nose of red fruit and spice. Long finish of red fruit, but again the acid is a bit high for my taste. (1185 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 9/5/2023: Ripe, sweet, hints of dark chocolate. (1061 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 8/28/2023 & rated 94 points: Ruby red in color. 15.5% ABV. Sublime nose of red and black fruits, roasted herbs, garrigue and blood. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Rich and concentrated with notable balance. Black raspberry, kirsch liqueur and Herbes de Provence. Exceptional length on the finish. Clearly modern in style but not at all over the top. Everything works in harmony here and the wine could not be more appealing. Best over the next 4-6 years. (1067 views)
Tasted by KL1975 on 8/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Less convincing than my last bottle. Long finish and high (15,5%), well integrated alcohol, but nevertheless noticeable in the finish, in particular in the beginning and on day 2. Still a modern, but very good wine and difficult to pair (different cheeses did not really match well). 91-92 (1046 views)
Tasted by shafer1994 on 7/10/2023 & rated 95 points: Charming and full bodied wine in a wonderful spot right now. Deep dark color, complex nose. Raspberry, blueberry, black currant, chocolate, spices, vanilla. Silky texture. Long finish with smooth tannins. Less impressive on day two. Therefore I would recommend to drink up within the next 1 or 2 years. (1048 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 7/6/2023 & rated 92 points: With a decade gone by since our last bottle, you would expect the tannins to have dramatically softened if not disappeared outright, and that's taken place here. Pop and pour into a decanter and consumed over two hours. In the glass, still looking relatively youthful, with no signs of aging at the rim. On the nose, still exuberant raspberry liqueur. On the palate, soft yet supple, leaning into the raspberry notes, along with some notes of port and a touch of molasses, leading to a smooth, round finish. I was hoping for more of the aromatic fireworks that CdP can deliver over time, but given the absence of tannins at this point, I'm leaning towards drink now. (899 views)
Tasted by mimik on 6/23/2023 & rated 88 points: Jammy over ripe and lacking character. (975 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 12/17/2022 & rated 97 points: Just cracked and desperately needs a decant. Red raspberry, plum, dried herbs and blood orange. Less fleshy and more depth. Leather and earth, touch of funk that I’m hoping blows off with a decant. Espresso? Really shined after a decant and paired with French food. (1367 views)
Tasted by Twowinechicks on 10/15/2022 & rated 90 points: Dark red, nearly opaque, garrigue-y nose, medium-bodied. Heady aromas of woodsy brambly fruit, although the fruit is largely gone with considerable heat remaining. [it is 15.5% after all]. We have another 4 bottles remaining, and there is no reason to delay drinking them. (1458 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 9/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Ouille, aïe, ouille!!! C'est EXCELLENT. 93,5 mais les 94 arrivent à grands pas. (1388 views)
Tasted by Twowinechicks on 6/9/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby, heady nose of blackberry, garrigue, and ample mouthfeel, surprisingly graceful for a wine with ~15% alcohol (although that was the style then). Tasted in conjunction with Charvin CdP, same vintage, at a send-off dinner for friends who were departing on a trip to France. The Chaupin had more fruit and was more elegant (not a surprise), and the Charvin was more savory and equally delicious. (1683 views)
Tasted by Zorg on 5/5/2022: Still too young and a disturbingly high alcohol. Had it at a tasting and others liked it much more then I did. (1681 views)
Tasted by k H i L o on 2/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Pas évident à décrire mais on peut dire que c'est du concentré de concentré néanmoins super subtile.
À carafer si possible ou ouvrir 3 heures à l'avance. (1548 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 2/6/2022 & rated 94 points: A fair bit of fruit on then nose. Full-bodied. My daughter noted some olive (?). Does open up after about 90 minutes. Pleasant structured complex red & purple fruit. Above average finish. (1549 views)
Tasted by KL1975 on 1/23/2022 & rated 94 points: Very good CdP, power without weight, very fresh despite the hit vintage, alcohol very good integrated, no heat in the finish. Glad I have two more bottles! (1522 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 12/14/2021: Une autre bouteille avec des impressions similaires. Un beau Châteauneuf d'une pureté remarquable. (1999 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 10/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Nez charmeur de fruit bien mûr. Gourmand, plein, cochon et tout de même bien équilibré, c’est profond et tout à fait délicieux. À point. (1952 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 8/31/2021 & rated 95 points: From Mag…..it’s ripe and modern, but really delicious, spicy, complex fruited CdP. Hit the spot for me….and everyone in my party. You can debate a point or two up or down but there’s no denying it’s a tasty well made wine (1752 views)
Tasted by Whisky&Wine on 7/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Significantly better showing from this bottle than past bottles. No longer a little hot or fume-y, the Chaupin has calmed down and displays richer fruit with silky layers of classic CdP flavors. Truly delicious now and clearly in the window.

Still have half the bottle left for tonight and will update the note if warranted.

Paired with sesame and garlic seared bavette steak. (1796 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 7/9/2021 & rated 95 points: No formal notes. Beautifully ripe fruits and garrigue. Fresh acidity. Full bodied. Beautiful wine. 94 - 95 (1805 views)
Tasted by anstruletz on 2/7/2021: This bottle remains in a phenomenal drinking window. (2059 views)
Tasted by Caruso on 11/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Garnet. First a bit closed. After decant delivering raspberries, cherries, blackberries, spices. On the palate an iron fist, but not in a velvet glove. Still tannic with some bitter notes and high alcohol that is hidden to some extent. But if you pair this with food, you feel the burning high alcohol and tannin levels. This is not elegant or light on its feet and more impressive than enjoyable and I doubt that time will turn this into something that really could make me having fun. 5/12/17/9 -2025 98 points from Parker in 2011, 92-94 from cask and 96 in 2019 from Czerwinski for the WA. I agree with the score from cask. (2199 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 11/7/2020 & rated 94 points: Wow, love this wine! Full flavored, with rich blackberry and cherry fruit, this is a large wine with great presence that is totally balanced despite its size. (2241 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 10/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Ramat-Aviv Boys meeting (at Dudu Milgrom): outstanding CdP! (1538 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
