Birgit Eichinger

Producer website

The winery was founded in 1992 by Birgit Eichinger and her husband Christian, who started out from 3.5 hectares of vineyards from her parents' business. After the ideal plot of land was finally found in 1994 at the foot of the Gaisberg amidst picturesquely located vineyards, the construction of the necessary operation facilities plus residential building was started. Since Birgit's husband, Christian, works in the building trade, a pretty estate with a love of detail, yet also a showcase winery with state-of-the-art technology were soon built. Over time, also the vineyard area was expanded so that today fruit is sourced from more than 9 hectares in the best traditional sites of Strass. Grüner Veltliner and Chardonnay thrive on famous Rieds like Gaisberg. Parcels on the Wechselberg are planted to Grüner Veltliner and the regional specialty Roter Veltliner. And the Heiligenstein with its residual soils is devoted to Riesling, to name but a few. The range of varietals has been deliberately kept traditional: Grüner Veltliner (60%), Roter Veltliner (5%), Riesling (25%), Chardonnay (10%) Birgit Eichinger, in fact, endeavors to plant only those vines which have proved successful for long in the Kamptal and are able to produce premium-quality wines. Vinification takes place in ultramodern, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with emphasis being placed on the purity of the must prior to fermentation. Depending on the vintage, Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner are also aged in barriques.

Lower Austria isn't "southern" Austria, but rather northeastern. It derives its name from its downriver location on the Danube River, which flows from west to east.
