v 3.10.10

Is anyone here a Twitter user? I've just been using it for the past few days, and it is eerily addictive.

Anyway, now when you drink a bottle or post a tasting note there is user-interface to let you associate your CellarTracker account with your Twitter username. Then you can send a Tweet (a 140 character or shorter message) every time you drink/taste complete with a shortened link back to the wine on CellarTracker. A few other changes: Anyway, have fun out there!

Bonus feature: Now you can set a default storage location to replace the formerly hardcoded "Cellar" (still the default but easily overwritten here): http://www.cellartracker.com/displayoptions.asp
And where before the first alphabetic item in the Location list would be picked, now the default is honored.

Sorry this took me so long to add...

BTW, in several hours I will post a small tweak to the "disable" Tweet checkbox on the 'add note' and 'drink bottle' screens so that it is 'sticky' and retains its last state.

OK, I added this. Now if you disable the Tweet control when posting a tasting note or drinking a bottle then the site remembers this. And you can always toggle at any point.

I like that idea too, I definitely don't want to be posting a tweet every time I drink a bottle of wine.

Have you applied to have "from CellarTracker" added to the end of tweets posted from your site? http://twitter.com/help/request_source

Also, I think it would be nice if the text area for the tweet was two or three lines and gave a character count (though I realize a character count isn't easy to get right because character encoding issues and keyboard event issues, especially on the iPhone).

Yes, the fit and finish on the current UI is a bit raw. Especially squeezed on the drink screen since that one is so crowded as is... I agree on the live character count. For the two places where I have a single-line control it at least maxes at 140. Not really friendly but not easy to break. From the consumed bottle list I popup a little multi-line dialog, more like the real Twitter UI but no realtime validation of character count. Anyway, I prioritized getting the functionality onto the site over the user experience.

I did submit a request to add a source. Haven't heard anything yet.

Nice job Eric. I agree with the idea to append "CellarTracker" source at the end of the tweet. Mine looks odd "jimpdx Drinking 2000 Chateau Fombrauge on"

The default Tweet has a http://cellartracker.com/w?213 or something along those lines. Now in the Twitter UI it says "Posted from the web" and that is what can/will be replaced by some sort of indication of CellarTracker.

Eric,

Can you make it possible to Twitt purchases also, and make it a option to select that it should twit automaticly whenever I register a purchase (not neccesserily the number of bottles purchased but what wine purchased with link to it).

This way I can make a workaround for one of my needs/wants, i*e to get status updates on my facebook page when I purchase a new wine. This since Twitter can publish on my status page in facebook automaticly and I can live with to only use twitter for facebook related stuff, using hellotxt to update all my other social services.

UrbanRed, great idea. I will see if I can add that purchase Tweet option tonight.

I just made several other changes in the Twitter integration:
  • Twitter approved my ‘source’ application today so now Tweets will say “From CellarTracker” at the end instead of “from the web”.
  • I fixed some snafus that could occur if you used & or other characters in a tweet from CT. (Missed a case of URL-encoding.)
  • Most importantly, now I test the return result from Twitter when I generate a tweet. If it fails then I return you to the consume/drink/note screen with your Tweet intact and the error message in red text. If you see a persistent error you can always give up on trying by disabling the tweet. Before I used to just silently fail and move ahead.
  • There is now a space “ ” after the hyperlink in the tweet so typing in there won’t mess up the hyperlink.
Anyway, please let me know if you see any issues, and if so send me that red error return that comes back from Twitter.

Good job on the twitter integration. UI kinda looks clunky right now, but I can't wait to see this featuer once it matures a bit.

A character count would be the most lacking feature here, as you might get things like this: http://twitter.com/konquest/status/1105992630

This seems most likely related to the way Twitter handles and shortens URL if needs be, as I distinctly remember writing the last two letters of bonbons in there...

That is actually the URL that I formed. Part of the issue is that the UI link you sent is mangling the display. This is the actual Tweet in your timeline. I agree it is truncated.

" Drinking 2004 Bertrand Brac de la Perriere Beaujolais Grille-Midi http://cellartracker.com/w?620375 Comme une poignee de bonbo"

Just 126 characters. Hmm, where did the other 14 go? I will take a look to see what might be going on...

OK, I think it is my bad. I am URL-encoding and then defensively truncating to 140 characters before I even send it. The thing is, I bet that Twitter would actually URLDecode and handle the truncation for me automatically... Here is the URL-encoded and truncated stuff:

Drinking+2004+Bertrand+Brac+de+la+Perriere+Beaujolais+Grille%2DMidi+http%3A%2F%2Fcellartracker%2Ecom%2Fw%3F620375+Comme+une+poignee+de+bonbo

140 characters on the button. I will have a fix up in 5-7 minutes...

OK, multiline edits in all places now. Character count down from 140 that turns from green to red if you get too long so you can adjust right then. Basically just emulating Twitter. Lots and lots more tweets are flowing today than before, so it seems like people are discovering this...

I myself do not have a Facebook app in the works immediately, but i know if at least 1 developer who is looking at using the new CellarTracker API to build a Facebook app, so I am hopefuly that we willhave something in the next several months. At some point, if no one builds an app, I certainly will. However, well ahead of that in the priority are (1) my overall site redesign, (2) an iPhone app or iPhone optimized site (there are already multiple iPhone apps out there and more coming) and (3) a Blackberry app and/or Blackberry optimized site. There are already at least 1-2 developers working on this as well.

Anyway, all I can do is beg for a little more patience. I know this is overdue. That said, I have been amazed at the amount of interest in the CellarTracker API in just the past few weeks. I think we will see a lot more apps this year for many platforms, and I am trying to quickly extend the API based on the feedback I am receiving.

All that said, it mightr be worth yoru while to make a Twitter account, link it up to Facebook via the Twitter app there and channels your 'Tweets' from CellarTracker to Facebook. Unlike Facebook, Twitter is not especially spammy or demanding. And it hooks up quite well with Facebook.
