2006 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese

See wine details

Today’s wine comes from the Mecca of German Riesling, the Middle Mosel, which produces the most elegantly structured Rieslings in the world. The father and son team of Wilhelm and Oliver Haag with the help of a good vintage and an excellent vineyard have produced storybook Riesling in 2006. Importer Rudi Wiest states: “At Fritz Haag the 2006 vintage is nothing short of a blockbuster. As hard as it may be to believe, Oliver and Wilhelm Haag have what we feel, is once again, the most stunning collection of wines in our portfolio.” The 2006 Brauneberger Juffer Spatlese is a great bottle to showcase their success.

Here is the latest International Wine Cellar review:

“Pale yellow. Aromas of apricot, acacia honey and lemon oil. At once unctuous and finely balanced, with flavors of peach stone, cinnamon and slate carrying through to the persistent, finely spiced finish. Elegant, long spatlese.”

91 points, International Wine Cellar

Haag’s 2006 Brauneberger Juffer Spatlese is a great barometer by which to measure Mosel Riesling. It has an impeccable balance of fruit and acid, and reflects the beautiful minerality of the slatey soil. This wine’s palate is incredible right now, bursting with sweet peach fruit. If you are looking for a wine to pair with an Easter ham this would be an excellent choice. This wine however is most brilliant when enjoyed by itself. This is a wine that stays young for ten years and remains interesting past then. If you have yet to experience great older Riesling, here is your chance for a long study.
