Wine maker notes

2007 Wind Gap, Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, James Berry Vineyard, Paso Robles

What can we say about the James Berry Vineyard hasn’t already been said? It seems to be a sort of sweet spot for this area. Robert Parker uses the term Grand Cru...and we suppose, if you really think about it, it is very fitting. Wonderful sites abound in Paso Robles, but this one has just the right position for the influence from the Templeton Wind Gap, as well as some of the most perfect grape soils that I have had the pleasure of crashing my bike in. Our first little wine from this exceptional site is predominately Grenache (51%) with Mourvedre (33%) and finally a healthy splash of Syrah (16%).

Tasting Note: Intense aromas of ultra-ripe raspberries and tiny wild strawberries explode from the glass, while subtle allegations of black pepper and spicy stems lurk in the creases. The palate is equally as intense, with layers of Grenache fruit that expand on your palate and fill your mouth completely. The structured red-fruited nature of this wine is tightly wound and in need of cellaring.

Disclaimer: While purely James Berry in aroma & flavor, ours isn’t quite as flashy and so elegantly big as some of the wines I have had from this site. Not sure if this is good or bad yet, but the wine is structured, red fruited and tightly wound. It isn’t a lush beast, and only time will tell if it is for the better.... I’m not sure...
