December 9, 2022 - Top shoulder fill showing slight signs of past seepage under the cap, however wine itself showed no advancement from possible oxygen ingress. Fully resolved tannin with aromas of smoked meat, cranberry, and spice. Acidity was pronounced and depth of fruit balanced still at this great age, a crowd pleaser and so easy to drink. Drank much younger in all respects than '42 Tondonia Gran Reserva opened 2 weeks later. Exceptional bottle if you can find it around! Back label indicated this bottle was sourced from an Italian cellar sometime in the last few decades.

1/28/23, 9:47 AM - Paternina 1928 Gran Reserva (this winery is now part of Conde de Los Andes) was realeased on three separate batches, most spent 40 years in barrels and was relased in the early 1970’s, a barrel was kept unbottled by the winery and those bottles were released with a wax sealed top in the late 80’s. I own a bottle of the second batch but I am not going to open it. Family hairloom and more than probably ruined after 50 years plus since it left the winery. However the wax sealed bottles were bottled less than 40 years ago and many should still be in great condition since they were highly collectible when released.

1/28/23, 11:29 AM - That's interesting, thanks! This must have been from one of the first 2 batches, did not have a wax-sealed top, but standard gold foil capsule. What you say makes sense given how relatively young this tasted. Importer back label says Delafino Fine Wines, Portland, OR.

1/29/23, 6:03 AM - I, in no mood to debate, just want to precise some aspects of your comments.
First of all the first release of this wine was in 1968. There is not such a thing like a second or third launch. This wine has been commercialised under demand during decades and that wax seal is not an indicative of anything but master's winery wish. If you have time enough just read what Spaniards are saying in their CT tasting notes, specially 12Glotones.

In second place, Federico Paternina is not a part of Conde de los Andes instead Marqués de la Concordia. Check it out man. There's a web page that can illustrate you.

Finally my initial impression was this is a fake bottle for that Soundinbetween comment 'this bottle was sourced from an Italian cellar'. At least that supposed Italian was only by family name.

Do whatever you want but sometimes trust in locals as I do.
    Cheers,

1/29/23, 11:06 AM - It's not unheard of for small importers to purchase and bring over older wines sourced from European cellars, either from restaurants or private collectors. I can think of one particular NYC retailer who does this frequently using their connections in Piedmont, amongst other examples.
