April 5, 2024 - The Nu was pulled first and double decanted for a little bit before serving. While not inky, it nevertheless is deep purple at its core and less translucent than the Rho. Decidedly fruit forward with black cherry, cola, Asian 5 spice and a distinct note of vanilla on the finish. The mouthfeel of the Nu may be a bit heavier with fine length on the palate. As always, this cuvée is more New World than the Rho cuveé. A fine wine, but not particularly exciting. Between the two, the Rho appeals more. While I prefer to let it age, when we decided we wanted a spot more of wine, and knowing I have more of these, I decided to take my first data point on the 2016 vintage. While still a young wine, its color presents more maroon than cranberry, but the color is even without shading from core to rim. Sweet black cherry leads the attack followed by waves of cola, forest floor, and lavender. Cinnamon and vanilla (but less than the Nu) pick up on the mid-palate and carries through to the finish. On the second night, the Rho was even better with sweet cherry and more lavender. Both clock in with 14.2% alc. With pork chop and mushroom sauce and blue cheeses. 04.05.24. Both Recommended.
