July 10, 2009 - 87-88 for QPR A formidable syrah from the Elqui Valley. Believe it or not, this wine is making a statement. Elqui is coming onto the map and it is a big part of the wine revolution in Chile. Syrah is going to be huge in the cool climate regions like Elqui and Casablanca valleys. This offering is on the mark and for a consumer targeted price point and a western, fruit driven style, it delivers this and an abundance of nice syrah characteristics. Extracted and ripe dark fruit with a touch of sweetness, deep oak toast with a touch of vanilla and earthy garrigue / herbs, and touch of pepper spice. It is mainly about the fruit of course. It is chunky and has decent depth too. Background but present tannins and acidity and a lingering finish w/ some heat to it. With only 10% of it going into barrel, I wonder where all the toastyness and tannins come from? Check it out.
