July 19, 2012 - Given to me blind. This is a really bipolar wine. My first thought was Gamay because it reminded me of a gamay we made a couple years ago that sat on the skins for too long. High-toned with surface culture notes, licorice, cinnamon, bing cherry, earth (perhaps a little Brett), and dusty minerals. The palate is extremely bright, light, floral and red-fruited. Under-ripe cherry, cran-cherry and violets. The finish shows a bit of volatility and some very nice earthy, mineral notes. Very long. I ended up guessing it was either a Beaujolais or a Barbera (because of the licorice and high acidity). I'm surprised by the acid in the wine, considering that this vintage was relatively warm and the gang of four typically pick ripe; I find this wine to be on the moderate end of the spectrum and perhaps a little simple. The tannins, too, are much lower than I've seen in 2009 Beaujolais. As for notes, z_willis_D is not only entertaining but slightly genius.
