  October 28, 2013 - Quite a bad showing. After drinking a bit I took a look in some of the wine discussion forums. Here I found the confirmation: There seems to be quite some bottle variation in 2009.
  
  And I also realized some kind of sparkling, which is mentioned as well.
  
  It is sad to have such a young wine with the missing quality. With older wines you can blame it on bad cellaring.
  
  I will not move forward buying / drinking pegau, though it is favored by a lot of people out here. But at this price tag I want consistent quality (at least for the young wines).

  10/28/13, 7:24 AM - if you dig deeper, i think you will find that CdP in general is very polarizing and it's often consumed far too early given the complexity of the varietal compositions, but I also think you find that Pegau is one of the leading CdPs out there and has far less variability than most CdPs...impeccable provenance is obviously the key to making sure you limit losses but so is cellar duration...personally, i think this vintage is at least 3 years away and will last mature well for decades

  10/28/13, 10:40 AM - If you like to drink CdP young look for Grenache heavy wines. I think 2009 and 2010 are ones to hold for 5-50, while 2011 under S40 is one I'll try a little early. Beaucastel is one that requires a lot of cellar time, but rewards are big. Janasse, while overpriced in the states drink well young, especially Chaupin, all Grenache. There are a lot of other options, but really think there are loads of good buy in 2011. 2010 is a year where there are loads of S. Rhone's like Ventoux, Rasteau and Vacqueryas that have some good qpr value and drinking well right now. Michel Gassier comes to mind as does Bila-Haut Villages. Both under $20

  10/28/13, 11:38 AM - Sounds like you got a bad bottle and you probably should have returned it to the point of purchase. I have had this wine three times since release, as recently as last Saturday, and it has knocked my socks off each time. Utterly spellbinding. Where are you reading about extreme bottle variation? This has not been my experience with this wine.

  10/29/13, 9:58 AM - Perhaps you had a little re-fermentation in the bottle causing CO2 to become trapped in the wine. Or they pushed a little CO2 into the wine to preserve freshness and because it was opened early it hadn't dissipated. I've had one bottle of the 2010 do this but fortunately after and hour or two in the decanter is opened up stunningly! What source was saying there was a lot of variation in the 09s?

  10/29/13, 12:12 PM - Dear all, thanks for your comments on my note. It seems that bottle variation on this Pegau is not so very common. However, I believe I can distinguish the symptoms of a wine being too young and this appearance.

  But probably I will try the 2010. We'll see. It seems that even the 2010 will be harder and harder to get.
