February 14, 2014 - (From magnum, decanted for two hours.) This was served by the same host who poured a poor 500ml bottle a couple of months ago. What a difference a good bottle makes! A fine dark ruby color is marked by flashes of deep purple in the middle. A supremely luscious nose that screams Châteauneuf-du-Pape: smoked game meat, ripe plums, espresso bean, candied lavender, spice cabinet and animal musk. Fat and rich in the mouth, the wine offers up deep and bright flavors of black and red fruits, licorice, coffee and lavender. The long, savory finish is framed nicely by still unresolved tannins. Superb overall balance. If this magnum is typical, then this format is just approaching maturing and will deliver even more pleasure in several years. 97+ points for now.
