June 1, 2014 - I’m not sure what this says about either my wife or me. On May 21 we opened a bottle of Carnival in her hospital room at Northern Westchester Hospital. I’ve reviewed Carnival of Love every Valentine’s Day since 2008; it became a tradition for us after our first tasting in 2007. The 2007 vintage still impresses, with a lovely smoked black fruit nose. On the palate you get mouthful of creamy black fruit. We drank the bottle over the course of four nights (I refrigerated the bottle between dinners), and I don’t recommend saving an open bottle. Day 2 was as good as day 1, but day 3 lost its edge. On day 4 it was no longer pleasurable. On Thursday morning (5/29) my bride of over 30 years died after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Rest well my love.

6/5/14, 12:41 PM - Thanks for sharing with the CT community. This is a touching illustration of how a shared bottle of wine can seal and preserve a fond memory. My sympathies for your loss. I just may open this bottle tonight and raise a glass . . . .

6/6/14, 3:49 PM - Thank you, Massengale, you got it exactly. Good food--and later, wine--were a big part of our family meals. It really was our 'normal'. I think when it became apparent that our time left together was short, we both longed for a few more normal dinners. We couldn’t do it without a few sips of a great wine to accompany the food, love, friendship—and create one last beautiful memory.
