The first whiff was overwhelming… like a bag of ripe cherries and violets. Funny thing, after about 10 minutes the aroma completely blew off… I was shouting at the glass, “nooo, come back!”. Moral of the story: Don’t decant Burgundy needlessly!
On the palate, cherries, plums, earth and this particular taste which I tried to place for a while until it came to me… it tasted almost like a Flanders Red Ale like Rodenbach Grand Cru (which also goes through oak aging). It evolved appreciably over time, almost like peeling different layers of plummy fruit, and each time revealing more spice and earth. Quite full bodied for Burgundy. The finish is soft and not as acidic as I expected. Tannins were subdued but lingering.
