June 1, 2007 - The bottle looked like hell (torn label, the fill was just above the shoulder, and the capsule was a little beat up). But the cork was fine, and surprisingly enough, it came out in one dark wet piece (kudos to the sommelier - I could have never done it). Once poured, it was a light ruby wine with some bricking. I don't think it was ever darkly colored the way that wine is made today. I certainly hope, though, that the bottles we are buying today can someday taste like this. The aromas were phenomenal as the bottle still had plenty of life in it as well as plenty of fruit. Plum, cedar, asian 5 spice, strawberry/rhubarb pie (and others I can't describe) filled the air. There was no green-ness or herbaceousness to the wine whatsoever. Our anticipation grew as we clinked our glasses and took our first sips. On the palate, the wine was beautiful: exotic, lush, silky and full. While it was very complex, it still displayed a freshness of fruit which I could have never imagined at this age. It also had an extremly long finish (especially for a wine that shed its tannin sometime ago). I can't describe how awesome this wine was (especially considering the way the bottle looked before opening). 1 of my top 3 wines of all time. It could last another 15-20 years.
