November 6, 2016 - Bright amber in colour. This was the first time I tasted a Coulée de Serrant; I took a gamble on this bottle, that is now 32 years old. I decanted, but should have followed the advice of Hugh Johnson to decant a lot in advance. The nose changed considerably over time. At first, a lot of damp cellar smell, this went completely away after about an hour in the decanter and gave way to a mixture of hay and some light apple note. Not overly complex. The surprise came in the mouth, a youthful texture, grippy with lively acidity; would have never guessed the age blind (nor did our guests, who first didn't know what they had been served). A stunning amplitude of flavour, a lot of mud palate concentration and very good tension. Magnificent length. Really a discovery. I'm curious to taste a younger version.
