May 30, 2018 - This is immediately reminiscent of a stellar bottle of '93 drunk sometime within the last six months. A spectacular bouquet of fresh and pure red berry with dry soily nuance and underbrush. Lots of spice, but more so in that tomato variety comparable to the '90 Rouget Echezeaux tonight. The palate is youthful with intense blue and red fruit and is still a little wound up. A real purity and elegance with a soft earthy texture. A very special bottle to track down as Clive Cotes, Jasper Morris, and a few other writers note that 1992 was the vintage that really made Philippe Engel's reputation, and that the 1992 Engel's are outstanding wines from a bad vintage. Interesting novelty aside, this wine was awesome, full stop.
