Community Tasting Note

October 24, 2018 - Ruby at the core, but with some browning at the rim. On the nose cherry pie and vanilla. On the palate, smooth, sweetish, but with a savoury finish: a bit of that earthy briar-patch Pinot thing. Perfectly judged tannins - very fine - for structure and length, and a touch of acidity still there despite its age to balance the richness of the fruit. Fromm are too good to need to imitate anyone or anywhere, but this did remind me of a good Gevrey-Chambertin from a warm year... (24 hours later: finishing the bottle, but with less pleasure: it has decayed notiecably overnight. The moral: if you open it at this age, drink it without delay!) Cork.

10/26/18, 5:10 AM - this is a great note, thanks Duncan. I've been a little reticent about letting the few Fromm's I have age past about 5-8 years but this gives me a lot more confidence, cheers, chatters

10/26/18, 5:51 AM - I had a bottle of the same vintage two years ago and wrote: 'Top quality New World Pinot. Medium bodied, and with lovely tertiary aromas developing at ten years of age. 13.5%, cork.' And earlier this year I tried the 2011 vintage of the same thing, of which I wrote: 'Superb, one of the best NZ Pinots I've had in years. Rich and generous, but perfectly balanced. No sign of tiredness: feels fresh and fruity, and with quite a few years ahead of it. I don't know if this is a luckier bottle than my last two, which I scored lower, or if it has just developed positively over time - but this is something special now. Bottle no 0398. 13.5%, cork.' Certainly an excellent wine. I would guess that the ideal drinking window would be fine to ten years, though I suppose that would vary depending on vintage.
