April 7, 2005 - my second go 'round with this puppy. decanted 2 1/2 hours ago. the fruit is more pleasing to me this time. the tannins are still evident, and the wine is obviously going to age for a decade or more, but i'm finding it more accessible tonight than i did a few months ago. bottle variation? the finish remains a bit drying/ dusty, and i presume that when the tannins resolve, this will improve. nevertheless, i'm not knocked out by this wine the way many other notes have indicated.
i reported on this wine last evening (92). i left about 200 ml in the decanter, and put it back in the cellar. the fruit has held, the tannins are sweeter, but there is an unpleasant gravelly/ pebble-like finish. i know how popular this wine is, and i like it, too. i'm just not ga ga over it. i actually thought i may have had some reverse prejudicial scoring on it last night. in fact, i'm going to lower my score to 91.
