July 3, 2020 - Bottle code LK116, ie. built from the 2011 Barolo vintage.

Fascinating nose built around a strong quinine and wormwood spine, there are hints of clove, dark chocolate, cool mint, and ripe red fruits. Silky entry, slightly oily texture, medium plus bodied, quinine and sweet red fruits, sugar syrup, fine yet enduring tannins, and such persistence. Such a beautiful thing, especially on a cold winter night.

Wonder how/if it will develop with cellaring? Various industry sources say it cellars well. I think the sugar and alcohol (17.5%) will hold it in good stead, although I'm not sure if any evolution will be that pronounced given the dominance of the quinine note.

7/3/20, 7:28 AM - I didn't know these had a bottle code! Is it on the back? Any special ways to read it other than the numbers are the vintage? I've seen some bottles sold as 2013/2014 vintage... how might that show up on the bottle code?

7/3/20, 12:17 PM - i have had the pleasure of sampling of a (at least) 25 year old Cappelano chinato complements of Jamie Wolfe. I believe it has mellowed and improved dramatically, assuming you enjoy age on your drinks. both are fine but i much rather would drink the older version, especially as a digestif.

7/3/20, 2:09 PM - aagrawal - re. the bottle code, it is faintly printed on the back label (bottom left or right). The last two digits refer to the year the Chinato was made, and supposedly Cappellano uses 5 year old Barolo Rupestris to make the Chinato, so LK 116 = Barolo from 2011. Hope this helps.

7/3/20, 2:14 PM - sman - thanks for your response re. ageing Barolo Chinato. Will have to keep my hands off for a while and see what happens.
