Tasting at Francois Schmitt; 5/13/2024-5/16/2024 (Francois Schmitt, Alsace): Tasting at the winery.

Delicate fruit, light wood, something green, young tannins, rosehip.
Very good balance already, great structure.
Will benefit from ageing.

Very good - Excellent.

Nice aromas of citrus and minerals, good balance.
Very good freshness and acidity.
Not very complex or long.

I believe this could gain with 2-3 more years in bottle.

Good - Very good. (85 - 86)

My final bottle of the 18 I bought and which I first had in 2019 - and this was fantastic. Dark and brooding. Huge opulent nose. Everything you want in a top end Napa Cab - was fab.

This wine is too much on the fruit for my taste, the young age just adds to that, thus lacking balance.
There are much better entry level Rieslings to be found.

Very good Sylvaner, good fruit profile, balanced.
Good, but not exciting. Fair for what it is.

Fruity, good Pinot fruit recognizable, not exciting, somewhat generic.
Good balance, not a lot of structure, okay length.
Maybe a bit young.

Good wine.

2nd last bottle, bought at discount 7 years ago. Fabulous wine. Very astringent to begin with but after 2 hours in the decanter it had come together. Loads of dark spices on the nose, great length, grippy tannins, and still some dark berry fruits. Probably a few years left but not too many.

Tasting at the winery.

Sadly I did not take notes during the tasting.
From memory this was a very clear-cut, fresh and mineral Riesling.
Nice balance and structure.
Exactly the style that I like, contrary to some of the other Rieslings I had in Alsace in the last few days.

Bought some bottles to reassess with more time.

Excellent. (91-92)

4/4, good cork.
Medium gold. Lightly petrolly, stone fruit, apple, touch of orange blossom. Medium sweetness, light bodied, peach, lightly creamy, lovely oily texture, fresh acids, good length finish. This has lasted well and is still going strong.

Finished bottle prev Coravined. The notes of cinnamon and cloves were a little too dominant over the fruit for me. Maybe needing a little more time in the glass. First of 6. Initial impression was that I preferred the previous 2 vintages,

Port can be so attractive when it's young that it's easy to go through your bottles of a given wine before they peak. Fortunately I have a few more of this beauty stashed away. This bottle showed a wonderful balance of sweetness and backbone while displaying a very deep color right to the rim. More pleasures to come as it ages--will ideally go back to this in 5 years or so.

3 months on and a bit more air...definitely a bit easier to drink. Needs food though...steak was good. Acidity supports the fruit, perhaps a little too much. Red fruit dominant, plus dried fruit and herbs. Tannin still a bit drying on finish but I think this will mellow a bit. Give it air.

This was quite rich and round with a fair bit of oak influence. A food wine, that for me missed some acidity.

(Disgorged in June 2001, base year 1998, approx. 1/3 of each Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay)
From the old standard bottle, then you know it’s pre-2004 base wine! Wonderful with golden yellow colour and bubbles slowly rising in the glass showing lovely maturity with acacia honey, apricots, minerals and seashells in a delicious way. Smoothing red apples and citrus acidity on the intense palate showing a creaminess on the mid and lengthy finish turning into lime zest bitterness.
(Still drinking very well with more than twenty years of extra cellaring)

Double decanted 2 hours before consuming at Elystan Street.Wine is still drinking beautifully a year on from my last note with no significant changes.I note higher community ratings than mine, maybe a little too fruity for my taste, perhaps underlining a left bank bias.

Very good glass from this "first time for me" DOC next to Montalcino.
Not unlike a good Rosso di Montalcino, or even a modest Brunello. Obviously more forward and friendly. This wine is showing good bite, tertiary notes and at 7 € a glass / 33 € a bootle at a restaurant near Malpensa airport I am very happy...

A bit more evolved....the nose was less exuberant than before, little more secondary flavours coming through now. I possibly preferred this younger for the pure fruit, but still very good and GV.

A really pleasant surprise, especially from a hot vintage: elegance personified, with a floral nose, silky body and gorgeous fruit purity. I actually found this more impressive than most Hermitage/Greal I've tried from this address. Super wine. Still fairly primary - no idea why Decanter suggest drinking up by 2024!

Je suis un peu déçu sur ce millésime : le vin manque de pep's et je le trouve un peu lourd et avec des parfums un peu bizarres. Il n'est pas au niveau ou il devrait être en tout cas.

Ripe and rich. Very modern. Deepest black cherry. Superb fruit. Very Queensberry in Stryker - c,early Csntral Otago, but with thick ( but not opaque) density. Excellent wine, and obviously a good vintage for Namny Goat.

Doesn't disappoint. Well made entry level GV. Slightly tauter than last year's which IMO is good.

Better than precious bottle. Less angular. Grenache seems more dominant. Probably for drinking in next year or so.

Lacks sufficient acidity to match the - in my mouth - slightly vulgar Moscato identity.
Not my style at all, but I would like to try some of the better Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco & Pinot Grigio from this, apparently quite famous cooperative.

Drunk over 2 nights. Has integrated well. Fruit a little sweeter, tannin just right. Not complex but good Bourgogne. Ordered 3 more.

Nose: Ripe plum, red raspberry jam, sweet oak char. Palate: Crunchy tart red berries; polished tannins; initially there's a notable layer of oak that spreads out evenly over the mouth, which does mellow with additional time in the glass. On day two, the oak and other flavors are more integrated, and the wine takes on a warming (almost prickly) kirsch liqueur character.

From list at Fagollago in the hills above San Sebastien - great resto - easy cab to and fro and well worth the sojourn - anyway the wine - roasted pruneaux and coffee notes - luxurious structure - no hurries on well-cellared bottles but pulling a cork now is rewarding too. Seems to buck my impression of ‘14 being perhaps a cooler vintage relative to ‘03,’05,’10 and ‘15 but warm tones dominate - nicely.

6th of 12, decanted 45 minutes, perfect cork and level, another big step up since last bottle in July 22, nicely nuanced bouquet with usual Morra attributes including rose, still slightly tough on palate if with fine and sweetish tannins, just a little on the thin side but could yet round out, if so upside, 10+ years. VG+ (16.5).

One hour decant. Very deep magenta color. Caramel green apple and black cherry dominate. Very smooth, dry palate. Firm, lower intensity tannins on the longish finish.

This needed more air time. It’s more acid-driven than I expected. Paired very well with my lamb at Brennan’s in New Orleans. It had stiff competition at the table (‘16 Hourglass Blueline and ‘16 Diamond Creek).

* Wine 4/4 (BDX spring tasting dinner). Opened 5 hours before serving (no decant).

Lovely aromas of nutmeg, damp earth, rhubarb and spices right from the start. A few hours in the wine fully unlocked revealing intriguing notes of toffee, caramel and game. Beautiful nose, very promising.

In the mouth - at peak with many years of prime drinking ahead of it. Medium bodied, soft velvety tannins, lovely red fruit and spices. Nice delicate sweetness on the finish, with slight tertiary port notes.

Just a lovely, well rounded and balanced effort. 91 points on the night. Drink now through 2032

The 2002 Seppelts sparkling red wine displays a deep garnet color in the glass. The nose reveals aromas of Marasca cherries, plums, tawny notes, cedar, and baking spice. On the palate, it offers a touch of sweetness balanced by remarkable freshness, soft tannins, and a medium texture. The long, dry finish is marked by flavors of cola, licorice, and herbal undertones. Overall, this wine has developed exceptionally well given its price point and drinking very nicely.
