There is obviously some bottle variation. I had this many times over the last months but this one was the best! Could copy the not from the 8th Feb. 2023: glad to have a few more bottles in the cellar. This is how I like a right bank Bdx after 20 years! No barnyard, ready to go after 2 hours of slow ox in the bottle. There are dried red fruits (Cranberries?), tobacco, wood. It's all perfectly balanced and smooth, even some sweetness on the palate that puts some vertical pressure on it....Stunning for the price (55,.- at retailer)...Don't need to decant too much...was consistently great from hour 2 to 5 after slow ox in the bottle....WOW 95+

Beer
It's been quite some time since I've been so excited about a Bruery beer based on prior history, but given the pedigree of American Anthem, how could I help myself? I was pleased to find that the peach character plays a huge role in this beer, coming out on the initial sip and lingering long through the finish. The cinnamon and vanilla are both present but satisfactorily restrained, which is a plus, but the stout character doesn't quite pop. It's no American Anthem, but it is awfully delightful!

This was a very good old school left-bank adventure. Gave it 3 hours of slow ox - it opens up slowly and stays at the fresh side. Dark fruits, tobacco, forest floor...everything you would like to smell and taste. Enough structure to last for many years but at its peak now! No Wow-effect but a pretty good wine. For me the 1989 is slightly ahead...93+

Nose of apricots and apple jelly with a good dose of spice, especially cinnamon, which seems unusual. Medium weight. Nice balance in the finish with a continuation of spice and apple. Exceeds my expectations.

What a distinctive champagne. Pours a pink-hued pale gold. Lavender, vanilla, and a bit of shortbread on the nose. This is light on its feet, offering bright, sweet red berries on the palette -- almost reminiscent of Beaujolais.
Super intriguing, and a lovely glass, but I didn't find myself wanting too much more. Will see how it does after some time in the fridge.

This deep ruby wine was decanted through a Vinturi aerator and allowed four hours in carafe prior to the first sip. It was then serially tasted over a two-hour period, during which time it was stable with respect to its aromatics and flavors. Offering a subdued aromatic array of morello cherries, allspice, mint and fennel, it delivers comparable flavors and stays dense on the mid-palate. Seamlessly alcoholic (13%), low in acidity and medium in length on the finish, this is very easy to drink, highlighting how well the varietal performs when it is given center stage and done in a New World style. Drink now-2030.

Popped and poured. Could have used more time but it still drinks well. Black cherry, florals, black tea, earth, a little tar comes through on the nose. The palate is medium to full bodied, elegant and nicely balanced. Still a bit of tannin on the finish which som decanting could have helped with.

Decanted one hour. A stunning wine. Lovely nose of violets, black currant and graphite. The palate is medium to full bodied, black and red fruited, nicely balanced with good acidity, sporting tremendous depth and a finish that keeps going. Still quite youthful with many years ahead. One of the best Napa wines I have had in a while.

Outstanding, tropical fruit on nose, great acid supporting the ripe fruit, palate is well rounded, very moorish, could run for another 8 easily

It came kicking and screaming out of the bottle. Very acidic, but you could taste the potential for when it would unfurl. 30 mins in decanter and the nose started to open up with notes of blackberry cassis and coffee. After 45 mins I took the first sip. It had a real smell and taste of pencil shaving, and deep dark fruits in the finish, but it was still a bit light on the palette. But it was showing promise. Good things to come. 90 mins after opening it really began to blossom. Truffle, tobacco and mushroom , and earthy pepper underpinning the dark fruit with red fruits bursting through. Long cigar notes on the finish. Would say the wine was at peak 2.5 hours post decant.

Very, very impressive wine; and glad to have ticked off a bucket list wine, but to my palette it’s on the same level as as something like a 1989 Lynch Bages at 40% of the cost.

97pts.

On Wednesday night I was gripped by a kind of madness. I blame a surprisingly good morning in courtus interruptus and then managing to catch up with all the missed time in the afternoon. In this febrile atmosphere I decided to mix socially with my alleged, fellow humans.

Gripping a small box of wine, steak and cheeses I descended on my host. They cooked and I drank and it was verging on being a manageable event. We opened 4 bottles, all of exemplary quality and this was the star of a very good night.

My bottle was fully mature, tannins resolved but primary fruit still evident - blue fruits and some darker beasties moving into wine gum (a product of the warm vintage?). Silky palate, great length and some complexity - earth, dark chocolate to match the fruit. Neither of my hosts really know much of wine, but they like it and one of them loved this. His wife, a very bright but rather functional creature, preferred the Eva Fricke Riesling. I leave it at that.

I am pleased to say that I woke up next day feeling fantastic and my hosts were, apparently, hung over; more fool them. Always temper your guzzling with water and a healthy fear of alcohol. A tribute to this wine is that it helped them break the iron grip of routine on their determinedly humdrum lives. If Zola were writing today, I do believe they might feature. Doubtless I would also appear, as the loathsome, sybaritic fool.

Great wine, easily mistaken for a very high-level chardonnay from Côte de Beaune. Decanted, reductive nose, very tight at first. After opening up, it showed beautiful acidity and minerality, a Chablis-like 'chalkiness'. It changed continually over the course of several hours. Beautiful. Only 500 bottles made, so little chance to taste this again.

Overall: I feel like this is down relative to years past. I remember prior vintages being a bit richer at this earlier stage. This wine seems a touch thin, and the fruit is already hidden on the palate. It’s balanced, though, so might improve with some age.

Appearance: deep purple, not quite totally opaque

Nose: Quince, blackberry, some floral notes, some greenness (like jalapeño), touch of leather

Palate: medium-light body, medium-high tannins, medium-high acid. Reminds of some Xinomavro or Langhe Nebbiolo I’ve had in the past. Cherries, cranberries. Not much in the way of cassis or chocolate. Touch of baking spices hidden in the background.

Finish: long, dry, some the green shows up but it’s more herbal than bitter

Still very fresh under screwcap. A touch of meaty reduction and some tart cherry fruit. There's earth and chocolate notes and the wine gains richness and sweetness at its core as it takes on air. Very good precision and cut and also very persistent. Still plenty in the tank.

Took the advice from Wetlaufer and stood this up for 24 hours. Makes a real difference and highly recommended for these wines even the fine sediment muddies the flavors. Great color and intensity for a 13 year old CA Chardonnay. Great texture and tone on the palate and gains depth over the two hours of drinking.

This is actually a Chardonnay-Smelly One blend (you may call it Semillon, but I know better). It is always one of the YY's I most look forward to each vintage; not because it is one of their best but because it gives me great pleasure.

As usual, this wine shows a light, bright, white gold and the nose and palate deliver a taught, elegant wine driven by ripe lemon, pear, citrus blossom and a very slight note of grassiness that never falls into weediness or throws the balance out. This vintage also shows flintiness, which does pop up in some other vintages, but here it is added to a chalky minerality that is quite arresting. This is a wine that improves immeasurably with time open - it is more muted on day 1 and opens up on days 2-3.

Length and intensity can't be faulted and I have scored this at the low end of 'Outstanding'. I have hesitated doing this, out of fear that subjective pleasure has overcome critical faculties. As such I note that Huon Hooke, a very fine Oz wine writer scored this at 89, whilst noting that he thought that time would work in its favour. So, there you have it. I had more time, I suspect, with the wine than did Huon, but he has by far the better palate.

Mouth- excellent showing even at this young age. Loads of red and dark berry fruit, with great counterbalancing acidity. Tannins present but won’t last long. Excellent and extremely quafable, which is not necessarily praise for a wine of this caliber.. really enjoyed but there’s superb Beaujolais out there that delivers at a similar level at a fraction. Hold 5+ yrs , maybe develop to something even more impressive
