Earthy, structured. Rather dry tannins but age has dissolved them so that it is not intrusive. Lovely tertiary aromas autumn leaves.

Slo-oxed for 15 minutes but more air is better. Given the sediment, a 15 minute decant might be best. A reasonable, medium bodied CSM Cabernet that showed black fruit, dark red fruit, spice and a touch of chocolate. The acidity was relatively balancing and there were some light tannins on the finish. Don't see it getting any better but should hold for a few years.

JM Vincent is the domaine to buy and drink in Cote de Beaune. This village wine made in a very hot year demonstrate the top level attained by the domaine (it was drunk alongside Geno Boulanger 2020 1er cru les Vergers and blew it) JM Vincent practices very high density planting, the best viticulture (high canopies) best winemaking techniques (keeping only the first press juice) and the result is just year after year, mind blowing. Prices are low for the quality.

A much better experience from a much better bottle. Here, the high alcohol was checked by remaining sweet fruit, tar, and acid, and the heat was not a problem. Also, the alcohol was not nearly as volatile as the last bottle, but it did shoe some nail polish remover, so it did not escape the flaw entirely. That said, this was still a delicious deep, fruity wine showing off cherry, orange and tar along with some roasted strawberry. It dips its toe into the jammy range of flavors but not the texture. The acid kept that in shape. Something mesquite is taking shape in the background. Not a typical wine for the House of Whitcraft.

W.O. Swartland (Sudáfrica). Ensamblaje de garnacha tinta (38%), syrah (36%), cinsaut (10%), cariñena (9%) y pinotage (8%). Granate cubierto.

Very similar to the 2018. Pale greeny gold. Citrus dominates the nose on opening, with time more sea weed. Full mouthfeel.

I initially, juicy lemon dominates and salty minerality. Refreshing acidity. After time, seaweed, oyster shell, chalk and more bitter citrus come to the fore. As ever, the last glass is the best.

Really good but drink slowly. Interesting to see how it develops. No hurry

PnP, but the wine was closed and tight when first opened, so decanted for 20 minutes and the wine opened nicely. Notes of red fruit and earth on the nose. The medium bodied palate displayed black cherry, some spice, and a good dose of earth, with balancing acidity. Should hold for a couple of years.

From a friend's cellar, this was had immediately after a 2008 Kay Block 6 and a Hensckhe 2008 Tappa Pass, and at the margin just shaded them for wine of the night. Slightly darker, riper fruit than the Block 6, but on the right side of being too dark/black. Lovely richness and weight in the palate, and a very long finish. For me, this is probably near the peak but it will surely hold for some years to come.

From a friends cellar and had at dinner. This was classic Mclaren Vale Shiraz, with very fresh red and dark fruit character under an initial impression of prominent American oak on the nose. Quite plush mouth feel, with the finish perhaps just a touch short but that is splitting hairs. Excellent.

Delicious, fruit forward yet restrained, good acidity, intergrated tannins, beautiful sipper, just a smidge hot (but at 15% makes sense).

I had this at a casual dinner so no formal notes but this was in a lovely place, with a very elegant, classic Eden Valley fruit profile with plush tannins and good freshness remaining. Totally drinkable now, it may still improve slightly but should at any rate hold for quite a few years to come.

From magnum. Airy, red fruited, spicy scents precede a red fruited and gorgeous attack with its silky sap, not overtly complex but some reasonnable depth of flavors, ending chalky and moderately long. Textbook Griottes. Did not have much expectation on this but actually a good surprise as this is a negociant cuvee.

Slo-oxed for 15 minutes, while warming from fridge temps. As usual, a refreshing combination of light red fruits, minerality and lemon citrus, with balancing acidity. Although this vintage will continue to hold into this summer, we've received our shipment of the 2023s so we'll be drinking the last of our '22s soon.

So delicious. Still fresh after all these years. Maybe even getting better? Love altesse and especially Berlioz.

Dust, old leather, dried thyme, ripe blackberries and ripe black cherries on the nose. Medium + intensity of aromas. Palate mostly consistent with the aromas except for some VA that feels a touch more than I tolerate. After an hour of air, the VA was gone, thankfully. Medium + intensity of flavors after that, most of which were the dark fruits. I agree with a previous review that noted an alcoholic punch at the end.

Full body with medium tannins, which were probably quite high when this was younger, and medium + acid. Between the VA and the alcohol...I just wish it was a little more balanced. It's still nice, I've just liked other vintages better. Some more time in the bottle will hopefully even it out. I'll check back in 2-3 years.

2017 Benjamin Leroux Clos de la Roche Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Gorgeous scents of five spices and red berries introduce the wine, the attack is ultra refined and all red fruited, pure silk sappiness, mid palate lacks a bit of depth, finish is gentle. After five hours of air, the wine became much tighter, revealing its tannic frame, ending longer in a chalky finish. Good CDR in the Leroux style, it requires 5 years more in a good cellar. Drink after 2029.

Very fine and pure scents of red berries and oriental spices introduce a bright, red fruits inflected and sappy mouthfeel with good depth of flavors. I like the airiness here. Can be enjoyed now.

90% Carignan, 10% Mourvèdre

Decanted for two hours. Ripe blueberries, over ripe black cherries, rose petals, dust, dirt, cedar and vanilla on the nose. The oak aromas are pretty subtle, though with everything else, the intensity of aromas comes out to medium +. The palate adds white pepper, orange peel, RED cherries and strawberry jam, as well as something resembling garrigue. It starts with a pop of blue and red fruit, then gets dusty and earthy. Finishes with a hint of plastic.

Medium bodied with medium + acid (when's the last time you had a Carignan with this much acid?) and medium tannin. Drink this now. Not going to improve with further aging; though I don't think it will decline for a while either. Made a great pairing with a chile relleno with chicken on cinco de Mayo.

Glad I waited for my last bottle. The tertiaries are more prominent, honycomb, apricot, marmalade... the mouthfeel is oily and more viscous than previous years. There is even some tannin perceived on mid-palate. This was a lovely bottle.

Medium plus weight, a mix of blue and black fruits. Sweet fruit profile, with a smooth middle and soft finish. No tannin to speak of. Good drinker on its own. I liked it better two years prior when it had more structure in the palate.

This is another easy weeknight pull from the Aperture lineup. As with many '19's I find this very approachable shortly after pulling the cork. this had the staying power over a few nights actually after I opened and then was away when I planned to finish the bottle night two. First of the 2019's I've pulled and stands right with the 2018 in my experience. Plush, cassis, violets, oak spices. Tannin management is phenomenal as usual. This is one you can easily drink now and enjoy or cellar 5-10 years and it should only gain a point or two. The use of Diam 10 corks on these I really see subtle changes over the 10 year period usually in these wines. 94+

Has started to improve since the last bottle in Dec. 2023. Solid structure for such a reasonably priced wine. Full body, dark fruits, and a soft tannin on the finish. Went well with some hard cheeses. It is better with food. I expect it will improve some more in the next 2 years.

Paso Robles Tempranillo! I am a huge Rioja fan, so I thought this would be interesting to try and it did not disappoint...

This took about an hour to open up. Syrah like from the color, nose, and palate.

This is a delicious sweet wine from Tuscany.

Medium bodied with high acidity and a long finish.

Sweet on the palate with red fruits, spices, chocolates and light earth.

Nicely balanced with enough acidity to balance the sugars.

Needs a few years to mature properly, but already enjoyable.

Has good potential to become a 94+ point wine. Would be nice to revisit it in 7 to 10 years.

100% Aleatico grapes were dried for one month, and then fermented, leaving 150 g/l of sugar. A tiny production of only 800 bottles made.

15% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$45.
