This wine is still alive and well. Surprising that tannins are still somewhat present. One can definitely feel the alcohol. Once opened what dominates are the smoke and pencil shavings scents with some dark fruit on top. A real pleasure!

Cloudy ruby with a slight orange tint. Sevilla orange and a little vanilla cream on the nose. Intense sour raspberries and orange bitters. This is definitely on the downside but has held up fantastically; the fruit is very alive, but I would strongly recommend drinking it within an hour of opening.

What a surprise!

I went to a party at a friends house. Over the years he has managed to collect some nice wines even though he doesn’t drink wine on a regular basis. Unfortunately he didn’t store them in ideal conditions but acceptable. In a closet or his basement that is air conditioned.

We were making pizzas and steaks so I figured I’d grab a bottle of something Italian. I saw this one and figured might as well open it. It’s either good and we can enjoy it or it’s taking up space When I tried opening it the cork split. There was staining almost all the way up the cork but there was about 1/4” of unstained cork at the top. I figured the bottle was a goner. I managed to get the cork out.

Wow. As soon as I did the aroma that came out of the bottle made me excited.

Cherries and herbs and menthol. Some vanilla and wood.

The color was a bit brickish as you would expect. Some sediment and bits of cork floating in there. (I know I was careless opening and pouring but we didn’t have a decanter and we were in a festive mood)

The taste had good acidity and some tannins. Berries and herbs. And some nice age and wooziness with dusty mouthfeel.

So surprising given my low low low expectations. Paired awesome with the pizzas.

Wow, two nights in a row of surprisingly good wines that, according to critics, were past their prime. Still dark in colour with slight bricking on the edges. Beautiful floral nose. Spicy black fruits with a touch of sous bois. Yum yum. Paired well with a perfectly cooked veal chop.

Cedarwood, lavender, strawberry compote all finely tuned with some spices define a very pleasing nose. Super quaffable on the palate. Buttery, velvety. Lavishly pleasing with a slight sweetness. Tannins perfectly melted. At its peak. Or in other words: the best Chianti I have drunk so far. By far! But drink quickly.....oxygen makes it die quickly.

Popped and poured to toast my brother’s 40th birthday. The bottle was pristine and the cork was in outstanding condition, considering the age. A little dry but completely doing the job. The color was surprisingly youthful; deep garnet with maybe an ever so slightly brown around the rim. Definitely some sediment but nothing out of the ordinary. On the nose, this is a mature wine with notes of leather, coffee, earth, sarsaparilla, mushrooms and my grandfather’s old camper van that we used to go fishing with when we were kids. The tannins have integrated and the acid has done a smashing job of keeping this CCR alive for four decades. Terroir-istes International - Italy, Chianti Classico (Rodwell House): Attractive bouquet of cerise, raw red meat, leather and red plum. Fairly rich entry with soft pliant tannins, good depth of flavour and fruit purity. Quite light-bodied there is an energetic acidity that keeps the wine fresh and forward facing although it lacks some width in the mid-palate, feeling a little sinewy. It grew on me!

Considering my note in January this year, I pulled my last bottle. Better than the one in January as there was no drying-up or fruit-fade. Not complex, but this very good plus last bottle was thoroughly satisfying, giving hope for other bottles still in cellars.

A personal note in 2012 records that I saw brick-red at the rim and felt that the tannins were beginning to dry-out with the last couple of glasses. Then, it was a half-notch below the fine rating I had given a year earlier. In 2014 it had fallen a further full notch, but I regarded that particular bottle as an anomaly. The one I had just opened had a level just into neck. Ruby core with brick red to light russet-watery fringe. Savoury, soured cherry nose is properly regional. but lacking nuance. The palate confirms the wine's origin, with sweet and sour cherry. Slightly malty oak. Before the bottle is half-empty, it's obvious the wine is dropping its fruit. Deep red colour with red berries, moulding leafs and some volatile notes as well in a mature and pleasant way. Silk smooth tannins on the palate with red berries before the nice long finish. This was good, starting to show some dried fruit, but with enough fruitful energy to keep up for some more years.

Parfaitement à point présentement, du moins à mon goût.
Un vin superbe qui était, surtout dans ce millésime, un formidable RQP. Hélas, depuis le prix a dramatiquement augmenté.
Sûrement dans le top des plus belles bouteilles bues en 2021.

Ruby red colour with an incipient maturity. Mint chocolate and a touch of vanilla with an intense finish showing warm fruity notes. This is starting to show off very well, but need a couple of hours of decanting to really open up and show its best.

Deep red colour with a maturing nose showing warm fruit, herbs, mint and some oak in a very pleasant way. Smoothing tannins on the palate with a nice minerals acidity and a finish showing dried herbs and some black pepper as well.

Finalement le bois s’est assagi. Belle intégration de moka, fruits rouge et une belle longueur avec finale sur le cafe au lait.
Excellent!!
Donc certain de ces toscans boisés ont vraiment besoin de quelques annnees pour se révéler à leur plein potentiel!

Twelve years old but still many years of life ahead! Some bricking but this wine smells and feels like a much younger wine.

Very aromatic nose of sour black cherry, herbs (oregano), worn saddle leather and tobacco leaf.

In the mouth this is a huge, full-bodied wine. Roaring tannins that feel more like a young Cabernet than an aged Chianti, mouth-watering acidity and integrated but present alcohol.

Flavours of black fruit, cherry, plum, cedar, chocolate and spice.

Tannic, spicy, cherry finish
