The 2001 Calon Ségur has a serious disposition, austere rather than generous but appealing nonetheless with a nose full of red cherry, redcurrant, juniper, warm cedar, and Iberian ham. Rather austere in the mouth, the fruit reluctant but the tannin present front and center! Lithe and well-proportioned, this offers plenty of pleasure in its slightly introverted way.

Bob's cellar. Pnp - ruby red, evident bricking. Nose has a reductive funk, very distant red cherry, black pepper, twist of liquorice and menthol, a sharp red acidity edge. Muted on tasting, faded acidity, all very subdued. Hmm! Needs to evolve. A few hours later the nose has developed more dark fruit, black cherry, and the bright acidity is still very present. Taste has developed too, tannins are firm, bright redcurrant is sharply there, some cigar box and compost base layer, earthy and mushrooms. Mature and ok, not that exciting. Agree with others on this needs drinking up.

Futures purchase, stored at 55 degrees and decanted 2 hours ahead alongside a 2000 Calon Segur. Nose of black, brambly fruits, tobacco and cigar box. Medium to medium plus body, lower acid and silky tannins framing a core of black fruits - beautiful balance. I liked this better than the 2000 we poured alongside. In a great place, ready but no rush. 93 points.

You have to like really old wine to enjoy this wine. Very mellow. Last fruit holding onto it. Gave a bad rotten egg smell when first opened but dissipated with decanting. Enjoyed it.

Just subtle weak plum and red berry notes on the palate.

Only short notes. At the first day with food mature notes in the taste, even already a bit tired. A bit more complexity than in 2022. At the fourt day ramarkably different: more lively, more fruit, rather domninant and a bit burning alcohol. More four-square. What to hink of this wine? 88-89.

Very typical graphite pencil lead aromas and flavors here. Medium dark violet color, doesn't show the density and concentration like the '16 did. Tannins are a bit tamer too. More elegance than power.

My first fully mature Bordeaux. Sat upright for 3 days to work the sediment down to the bottom. Bursting with tertiary earthiness, leather, tomato leaf, basil/herb. evolved and morphed from red to black fruit. raisinated and caramel and then, at the finish, fresh red fruit. a fun experience worth seeking out

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ PdV): Dark berries and smoke in the bouquet. On the palate a sweet start with vanilla, well dosed oak, firm acidity and sticky tannin. A lot of sweet impressions. The wine is still in its infant stage but already delicious. 94 - 95+

Total Eclipse Wine. Decanted two hours.

Past its peak. A rather fine nose of muted fruit and leather. Palate of faint fruit, leather and soil. Finish was 5 seconds, then gone without a whisper.

Glad to have had this experience. All the heart and toil people put into crafting this light held together with moisture shouldn’t be so negated by someone like me who is passing judgement while I have a day job clicking a mouse and a wondering which past fork in the road I choose unwisely. So, while no <pause> moment for me, I felt lucky and good to have a taste of this.

Also, the Total Eclipse was fucking awesome. The biblical awesome, not the present-day shadow of the word.

2004 Bordeaux at Blacklock, City, with NLWTS (Blacklock, City): Acidity pretty prominent. Medium bodied (much lighter bodied than the ‘04 Montrose tasted alongside). Still a ways off ‘full’ maturity on the palate, but it doesn’t feel like it has much stuffing left in the tank in terms of structure; what tannins are present dissipate pretty quickly. This is good, albeit I had higher hopes! Just not hitting the heights I had hoped for.

Note from day two. Pronounced exotic nose of blackberry, dark plum, cassis, forest floor, five spice. Some emerging tertiary notes of mushroom and leather which weren’t there on day one. Full bodied on the palate with plush, velvety mouthfeel, very ripe tannin, and long balanced finish. Outstanding. I think it’s drinking well at 15 years of age and happy to have opened my case at this point. The emerging tertiary character will evolve however so also happy to be drinking this over the next 15 years.

Stood up for months and decanted off age-appropriate sediment. Deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; medium-plus intensity aromatics with blackberry, capsicum, tobacco, smoky cedar, forest floor; palate is medium-full bodied, refreshing medium-plus acidity throughout, very balanced medium alcohol (honestly could be 12.5%), perfect balance of some residual youthful fruit with early tertiary complexity and fully integrated tannins; medium length finish. This is superbly balanced bordeaux at maturity, showing impeccable fruit and additional complexity. Ready to go immediately after decanting, but this should have a few years left in it. (Also ready to go now, and I'll start drinking through my bottles.) Unlike my note from 2018, this wasn't at all thin through the midpalate and seems balanced throughout. Of note, none of the rustic tannin-heavy feel of most St. Estephe. The balance on this is really a standout. 94
Double decanted when first opened, retasted 5-6 hours later and this had started to fade a bit and lose some vibrancy. Drink when first opened.

This wine is the most expressive of St. Estephe terroir I’ve ever experienced. Was even better the following day. Will improve with more age. Also, cassis, Cabernet spice and exotic oak. Not particularly rich and jammy; but classic Bordeaux black fruits. A few lingering tannins; yet not excessive. To fully enjoy; I’d give it a 6 to 8 hr decant. Better yet, overnight

Cherry, wax, red rope licorice, a bit of dusty boot, green pepper. Still feels very young amazingly. Hints of secondary characteristics coming out. Great mouthfeel and mouth coating. Cherry ludens. Very good wine

Bordeaux night: Initially muted with all tannins and no fruit, rather burly and clumsy that almost everyone didn’t like it. Revisited a couple of hours later and a wonderful opaque core of black fruit emerged to balance out the drying tannins. A little more modern than I would have liked but not overly so.

An oddly fruity wine. Odd the operative term. Big blackberry jam flavors but too fat. No acid. Nose is a mix of horse manure, horse, saddle leather, and flowers. What a mixed up wine. To some it could be drinkable. I advise don't waste your time. On final thought, would probably pair with some really stinky French Cheese.

My last bottle of this bought EP. Perhaps the most complex of the three wines had - full bodied, tannic and earthy with a long finish. It did change quite a bit during the night with some 'dustiness' coming through as well. An interesting wine.

Personally I just love the herbal character, very reminiscent of a recent 2000 Figeac, spicy, leafy, tobacco, nice red fruit, tart. Almost like a rich Chinon. My #5 and the group #6. Correctly guessed as Calon-Ségur.

Bordeaux 2004 20 years on Part 1 (Blacklock City): Tight. Tighter than the Montrose, as least to my palate. Marked note of herbs, mint tea, not exactly fruit-laden. This is as straight-laced as they come, not gruff or grumpy, just very linear and strict. It gains some sweetness, some red fruit peeking out with time, whereas the Montrose remained dark the whole way through. An overwhelming feeling of restrained elegance, of having been made to be reserved and distant. And fully fulfilling that objective!

Double decanted an hour and a half before serving. Terrific old school claret here - black fruit, cedar, tobacco, greener herbal notes, and a more savoury earthy/graphite character all come together seamlessly on a medium weight frame. It's not a big wine, but there's remarkable intensity to the aromatics, and a striking palate presence with bright acids giving it a sense of lift and vibrancy. Lovely wine that still has years ahead - I'll hold my remaining bottles a while longer.

Jonathan's 2004 horizontal (Blacklock City): A classic Left Bank nose, with some hints of spice to add interest. Despite having been double-decanted the morning before the dinner, still pretty tannic and lacking in mid-palate amplitude, although time in the glass did emphasise the sweet-fruited side of the wine. Grippy dark fruits and some graphite. Really benefited from being drunk with food.

First of a new lot I purchased recently. Closer in type to the last bottle I had. Nice aromas. Blackberries and a bit a bitter herbs. A bit soft, midweight, a bit gritty. It's not going to blow anyone away, but it was an easy and pleasant wine to drink. Based on this bottle and the last, I don't think this will last much longer.

bought en premier and kept safe until now
Popped and it seemed ready to go
The rim is still clear and the core is ruby. A soft barnyard aroma blew away leaving mint and cedar smells
The tannins seemed soft and this seemed light and refreshing with relatively lucid fruit leaning towards cherry. It went well with a roasted chicken and seemed to gain weight over 2 hours.
Not wow but deeply satisfying

First time I’ve had this wine. Spoke to a professional wine educator, and he discouraged me Decanting, despite multiple comments by other people, how it took hours to open up. I do agree with the sommelier that when a wine is this old And you decanted it can go flat And you can lose the nuances, so I abided by that. I made sure to stand the bottle up for at least several hours, but it would’ve been better to stand it up for at least 24 to 48 hours When I took off the capsule cork was severely mildew with mildew on the surface The label was a bit old, looking with yellowing, and I can’t remember whether this wine stayed with my cellar or whether I acquired it before I had my cellar. The nose still had a little fruit, and it was dark currant. It definitely had earth floor. It was not double decanted it was just decanted, and then after giving a few large swirls in the decanter. Small amount was put in each glass. Most of us enjoyed this with a steak. The tannins were still present, and it was very well integrated. Didn’t really have any bad aldehyde The taste was phenomenal, and it had a lot of length With secondary entry notes black fruit was muted, and this was a great year in Bordeaux. It was the year that the Bordeaux industry recovered. I got some light graphite. I got earth floor and I got everything you want in mature Bordeaux It has plenty of life left in it and a more years for sure. Oh, by the way, the cork was pretty crumbly so be careful and use a Durand puller

Super fruktkvalitet og solid ryggrad.
Sitter lenge med en tanninstruktur som fortsatt trengs å slipes litt.
Meget bra, men liker mine Bdx med mer alder/modning.
