Savigny-lès-Beaune

Tasted March 3, 2010 by brooklynguy with 464 views

Introduction

We wound up with a nicely diverse array of wines - a few producers and vintages. Perhaps it was a root day or something because none of the wines showed terribly well. The 07's showed best that evening, although the 06's were quite good the next day. Not a great advertisement for Savigny-lès-Beaune, i'm sorry to say.

White
2007 Domaine Nadine et Rémi Marcillet Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
lots of oak and vanillin, but over the course of the evening it integrated and shoed good material, with ripe fruit, minerals, and a pungency that i liked.
White
2007 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
not a good showing. the wine had appealing tropical notes on the nose, but the palate was really weird, with a vodka-like spirit sense to it. awkward, not pleasing, no one at the tasting liked it.

Red
2007 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
more forward than i expected. dark and earthy nose, lots of wet clay, lots of dark fruit. the palate is rich and extracted but not overly done. tiny dark berries on the palate, all infused with earth. lovely wine and i'd like to see it again in 7 or 8 years.
Red
2007 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
very lovely wine. clear and resonant red fruits, very mineral, quite forward and open, lots of class. drank next to the Bize 07 aux Vergelesses and the difference in soil type was explicitly clear. it doesn't seem as though this has the stuffing to age for more than 5-8, which isn't a knock on the wine - it's delicious.

Red
2006 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
lovely aromatics right off the bat - clay, dark berries, good perfume. Angular and closed on the palate. the next day this wine really came together, with a gorgeous floral pungency on the nose and obvious depth of material, good intensity. very very good wine.
Red
2006 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Bourgeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Aromatically closed, but lovely on the palate. a spare and elegant wine that ultimately is very good, particularly on day two. a bit of heat on the nose maybe, but well knit. clearly shows the house style, and also the terroir. as should be expected, drinks better today than the fournaux or vergelesses.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2004 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Gravains France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
not impressive. there are nice things - some pretty dark fruits on the nose that carry through to the palate. but the wine feels more evolved than one would hope for, and there is a savory element, like nori, that i found unappealing.
Red
2001 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Unimpressive at best, flirted with being a downright bad wine. I don't think it was flawed, but it showed weirdly cloying fruit and lots of awkward alcohol. A library release that should have stayed in the library.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Robert Ampeau & Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
dead on arrival. seaweed. nothing redeeming going on here.
Red
1996 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
took forever to get going (out of magnum might have had something to do with this). and even then, never really got going. underwhelming, not a lot of life to it, nothing specifically savigny or dominode about it. a shame, we all expected more from this one.
