Single-Blind Cabernet Tasting @ Urbana

Washington, D.C.

Introduction

About a dozen friends got together at Urbana for dinner and a dozen bottles of Cabernet. It was a difficult night for all palates, considering how many big wines we drank. It was still a ton of fun. Not a bad bottle in the bunch. I can't believe the two Margaret River cabs took the bunch! The other wine that really stuck with me was the 2003 Pape Clement.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
2006 Matassa Côtes Catalanes Cuvée Nougé France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
88 points
what an interesting white. nose of skunky cabbage, petrol and a bit of white flowers. citrus flavors, some funk. oily. really unique.
Red
2004 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon Kronos Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
nose: dark cherries, cedar, blackberries. the attack isn't huge, but then it just fills the palate with plush, chewy tannins. the oak is a bit biting, adds lots of dark chocolate flavors. still a solid bottle, albeit a bit oaky. guess: napa. maybe a bit young?

2001 Stonestreet Cabernet Sauvignon Black Cougar Ridge USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
90 points
almost pitch color in the glass. nose: darker than the first botle. almost brooding on the nose with the amount of blackberries and purple paint. this attacks the palate. it's intensely tannic. thick with dark fruit, but i really like the rosemary, cherry liquer and pine. the finish is straight-up menthol. guess: napa. i was totally surprised that this was a 2001. would've thought maybe an 07. this has years ahead of it and the stuffing to evolve into a much more complex wine.
Red
2000 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
92 points
ruby colored in the glass. the nose is a bit lighter. that with the color suggests some age. black pepper on the nose. dried flowers, cherry compote and a very distinct note of soy sauce. medium bodied. very silky on the palate. lots of ripe currant fruit. dense, but approachable, accented with tobacco leaf, meat and black pepper. guess: old world, not bordeaux, but i don't know where. definitely some age on this.
Red
2004 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
94 points
bright purple in the glass. the nose is bright and explosive, so much livelier than the other wines. pure, fresh berries, purple skittles, and vanilla coke from a 50s-style soda pop shop on the nose. massive on the palate, but not jammy or offensive. this cab is as explosive as it gets. what is amazing about this wine is its freshness and acidity. the balance is phenomenal. raisenets on the palate, cherry liquer, rasberries and dark chocolate. a very long finish. i popped this right before the tasting, and i now wish i would've opened it like six hours earlier. it's got a ton of potential.
Red
2007 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
91 points
almost pitch colored in the glass. plums, ink, smoke and charcoal on the nose. the attack on this wine is just that: an attack. it's like a full-on assault of paint and thick tannins. i mean, this is so big my palate doesn't know what to do. tasted blind, i thought this had got to have about 16% alcohol. quite hot. the finish has black magic marker. this is huge, and very, very young. i rated it a 91 because i enjoyed the attention this wine demands. i don't think i could drink more than a glass of this. it needs 10 years at least.

Red
1997 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
91 points
nose: dark currants, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco. medium bodied. a bit hot. reduced cherries on the palate. lots of blueberry sauce. spicy. chewy tannins. solid stuff, definitely some age on it. don't know how much longer this one could go.
Red
2006 Rulo Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
88 points
almost black in the glass. laffy taffy on the nose and skittles. candied as hell. bright on the palate. lots of maraschino cherries. too huge. too big. too candied, even for me. guess: walla walla.
Red
2000 Gaja Langhe Darmagi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
91 points
the nose has cedar, tobacco, leather jacket and eucalyptus. delightful nose. medium bodied. silky, rich and spicy. very complex, and the mouthfeel suggests some age.
Red
2002 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
94 points
ruby colored. the nose has dust, garlic dill pickles and some loam. on the palate, i got lots of pure fruit, rich loam, along with some brine, dust and minerals. i seriously thought this was a well-aged bordeaux. very surprised it was a different vintage of the wine i brought. makes me want to age the 04 for longer, although this had a cork and the 04 had a screw cap.
Red
1998 Andrew Will Cabernet Sauvignon Klipsun Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
90 points
very cloudy in the glass. that and the light ruby color suggest some age. smells like moccasins, sweat and fruit compote. spicy on the palate, with high acid, brine and a bit of chive. still has good weight and balance, although this should probably be drunk soon. guessed a bordeaux with 10+ years of age.
Red
2007 Crushpad Vayniac Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
mocha on the nose. cherries and vanilla coke. this is rich, plush, silky and sexy. i thought this was a young napa or maybe even a clare vale or something. needs time though. it opened up much more over time.
Red
2003 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
this was an exceptional wine. the nose showed dark plums, earth, roasted coffee and bacon. dark and rich on the palate. charcoal. loam, spice and earthworms. this screams old world, but it's got a lot of richness and depth. a young wine, but its showing very well now. i have the feeling this would have the stuffing to go for another decade. after finding out it was the pape clement 03, i wasn't surprised. wanted some more, but it was all gone!!!
