Introduction

Great night with a variety of stellar wines.

Flight 1 - Bonus wines, not part of the main event (4 notes)

Red
2005 Meek Family Estate Inherit USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
92 points
Very Dark Red. Great nose, bright cherries, earth, dusty. Palate has nice acidity, follows the nose well and has soft, fine grained tannins. Excellent balance. Really nice wine. Second time drinking this and I am really impressed. Great QPR.
Red
2003 Red Edge Shiraz Jacksons Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote
86 points
Mediocre Shiraz with no particular distinguishing characteristics. Some pepper and Dark fruit on the nose. Somewhat sharp tannins. Short finish.
Red
2007 Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas Argentina, Mendoza
86 points
Dark red color. Nose of earth, black fruits, somewhat tannic. Basic everyday Malbec. 86+
White
2008 Evesham Wood Blanc du Puits Sec USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
88 points
Interesting blend. Nice aromatics, citrus and minerality. Palate is crisp and clean. Nice finish. Very pleasant.

Flight 2 - Main Event (8 notes)

Red
2004 L'Aventure Optimus USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
92 points
Tasted blind. Dark purple color. black fruits with cedar, pepper, spice, and later a nice earthy component. nice tannins, well balanced. 92+pts.
Red
2004 Rotllan Torra Priorat Tirant Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
91 points
Tasted blind. Dark purple color. Fairly aromatic on the nose, blackberry, black currant, some heat, glycerin, . Palate shows good concentration, black fruits, pepper and spice. Medium finish. I would not have pegged this as an old world wine. 25% grenache, 25% carignan, 25% cab, 15% syrah, 10% merlot blend.
Red
2005 Tim Smith Wines Shiraz Barossa Australia, South Australia, Barossa
91 points
Tasted blind. Dark purple. Blackberry, black cherry, earth, spice, oak on the nose. Palate is consistent. Medium-full body and nice finish. Consistent with previous notes and score. 91+pts.
Red
2003 Owen Roe Cabernet Sauvignon DuBrul Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
92 points
Dark red purple. Nose shows cassis, cherry, spice, cedar, earth and some floral qualities. Nice on the palate, but the tannins are slightly sharp and the finish is just a bit off. This seemed to deteriorate over the evening making me think this is a drink sooner than later wine. 92- pts.
Red
2006 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Dark red purple color. Nose has black cherry, blackberry, creme de cassis, earth, cedar. Palate has lots of black fruit, pepper. Great concentration. Very well made wine. Still quite young with prominent but round tannins. 93+pts.
Red
2003 Kaesler Shiraz Old Bastard Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
93 points
Black, purple color. Nose shows herbs, cedar, spice, and some understated dark fruit. The palate diplays earth, coffe, tobacco, cedar and is well concentrated, but is somewhat lacking in fruit. Medium-long finish.
Red
2004 Kaesler Shiraz Old Bastard Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
Black purple color. Amazingly concentrated wine. Distinct charcoal on the nose with a smokey, mequite quality to it as well. Black fruits. Palate is strikingly more concentrated in the fruit profile than the 2003. Great depth on the finish and excellent balance. Tied for my WOTN.
Red
2002 Glaetzer Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
Dark Purple color. Nose is gorgeous with floral, red and black fruits, earth, mocha, and spices. The palate is well concentrated with great balance. Very long finish. Very elegant style integrating fruit and secondary characteristics. Ben Glaetzer knowns how to make wine. This tied for my WOTN with the 2004 Old Bastard. But the Glaetzer takes it for style, finesse, and QPR.

Closing

The 2002 Glaetzer Shiraz was a bonus wine.
