Introduction

Angelo Gaja gave a great presentation about his family´s history, the art and craftsmanship of making wine. The original x comercial wine positioning and a great deal more about Gaja´s philosophy on winemaking. From tartufos to cantinas and succession, he entertained eveybody with his great sense of humor and italian elegance.

2003 Gaja Langhe Rossj Bass Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Yellow/straw with some golden nuances. Limpid and clear. Intense honey on the nose, after swirling reveals citric fruits and flowers. Good body, opulent, nice balance but good use some extra acidity. Lenghty and pleasurable finish. Gaja sugested aging it for over 10 years.

From the new winery in the coast of tuscany in Bolgheri. Gaja spoke with great enthusiasm and pride of this project. The architect Giovanni Bo did a great job for him with this modern style construction, almost entirely underground.
Magari (wich means "who knows" or "may be" - as explained by Gaja himself) shows rubi color and plums, mineral and earthy notes on the nose. On the palate it´s very soft, round and balanced, great retrotaste. Tasty finish. The wine should be drank not held.
Gaja also talked about the negotiation to buy the property which took forever and almost didn´t happen. The name Ca´Marcanda (negotiation post) was given to remember this peculiar negotiation.

This was the younger and simpler wine of the tasting. Quite closed in the beggining, it took a while to reveal red fruits and wood (mostly). Good balance but the tannins are still quite hard. Nice finish.

1999 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Rennina Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Rubi color with brown hue. Complex nose of ripe fruit, flowers and spices. After a while there was some leather too. Extremely enjoyable in the mouth with great acidity, a perfect body and very fine tannins. The finish is very elegant and complex. 100% sangiovese from 2 vineyards. The other Gaja brunello (Sugarile) is a single vineyard wine and also 100% sangiovese. The richer Renina soil gives it a softer and less tanic profile than Sugarile. This wine seems not less than perfect pairing for many, many italian dishes.

100% nebbiolo from 14 vineyards around the village of Barbaresco, Cuneo province. Muted nose at first and didn´t change much throughout the tasting. This wine is not made to be drank apart from food. The hard young tannins and crisp acidity demand food and it is still way too young. Has a long live ahead but already shows much finess and elegance.

Winner of the tasting. 92% nebbiolo and 8% barbera from the Conteisa vineyard in La Morra, Cuneo province. Darker than the others and much more accessible too. Amazing nose, complex, floral,licorice,spices and much more notes. Refined texture, round with great acidity and very fine tannins. Seductive, elegant and surely unique. Lingers a great deal. This wine is a masterpiece.

Closing

Gaja´s wines are a great expression of original wine making. The wines are made to be enjoyed with food and to be aged for a long, long time. Quite a lesson about the world of wine. "Wine has to be dignified".
