Flight 1 - Starters (3 notes)
The White Burgs were disappointing, but the Sake made up for it.
White
2005 Louis Jadot Meursault
84 points
a little sour with some oxidative notes -- this could be forgiven if there was better fruit behind this, but there isn't. med(-) sour finish.
Sake
N.V. Takasago Shuzo Junmai Daiginjo Ginga Shizuku (Divine Droplets) Hokkaido
92 points
peach and floral notes with some sweet spice overtones. Enjoyed this.
White
2005 Domaine Jean Pierre Diconne Auxey-Duresses Vieilles Vignes
88 points
a little bit of flour/roux notes on this with light fruit that falls behind the other notes and makes the wine a bit dull. finish is a bit short. nothing wrong with this, but it did not impress either.
Flight 2 - Random assortment of Volnay (3 notes)
A mish-mash of what we had. The Clos des Ducs was a rockstar and my WOTN.
Red
2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Volnay Vieilles Vignes
89 points
a little white pepper and dark fruit liqueur. raspberry notes are most prominent on the palate with some sanguine saltiness on the medium(-) finish.
Red
2006 Domaine Dublère Volnay 1er Cru Pitures
91 points
Really nice and surprised by the $30 I paid. Dark red fruit with some black pepper notes. Root Beer / Sarsaparilla, and some sweet spice (nutmag?) notes that were really enjoyable. Medium finish rounds out the wine well, though could go a little longer.
Red
2005 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs
95 points
delicious. black fruit, mint, very soft, powdery tannins. strong fruit notes without any sense of syrup/jam. crescendos from the late midpalate into a medium(+) finish that really brings it all together.
Flight 3 - Santenots (3 notes)
One young, one aged, and one corked...
Red
1996 Robert Ampeau & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Santenots
92 points
acid a little sharp on this, but a really nice developing flavor profile. black fruit, black pepper, some dried violet, caramel, and licorice tones. med(+) finish shows sharp acidity.
Red
2006 Hospices de Beaune Volnay 1er Cru Santenots Cuvée Gauvain Maison Louis Jadot
92 points
nice black fruit notes with floral notes on top. light earthiness behind. med acid and a med(+) finish that did not have the depth of some of the other wines, but made up for it with length. Pleasant surprise.
Flight 4 - Clos des Chenes (2 notes)
Red
1996 Joseph Drouhin Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes
89 points
cherry cola, black fruit, some licorice. high acidity leads to a nice sharp finish. would be nice with food.
Red
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes
93 points
black cherry, black pepper, roasted coffee beans. medium body with a medium(+) finish that leaves smoke behind.
Flight 5 - Pommard (1 note)
Neighbor for comparison
Red
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens
91 points
brighter than the volnays and more masculine. red cherry and raspberry flavors dominate. more oak than the volnays. med finish is pleasant, if a bit sweet.
Flight 6 - Dessert (1 note)
My first time trying a Donnhoff BA -- not up to the highs of the Eiswein, but delicious.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel #20
95 points
peach, burnt sugar, tropical fruit (passionfruit?). wonderful complexity and concentration of sugars. the burnt sugar character kept changing forms. long long finish. decadent.
