Casual dinner with great wine in NY

Tasted May 15, 2009 by Burgundy Al with 530 views

Introduction

Thought we would relax the day after Magnums for David with something more casual...but too much great wine seemed to show up.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2005 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
flawed
Falling apart, disjointed.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
flawed
Never one of my favorite vintages of this great wine, but this time is was slightly corked.
Red
2000 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
Great floral start with lots of spice. Unquestionably Vosne with its spice and elegance. Good fruit depth and concentration, with plenty of power on the finish. Perhaps not a CP that will last decades, but certainly good for at least one more decade.
Red
1990 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
Challenging wine to evaluate. Sensational start with rich and bold flavors and spice. Very nuanced overall with lots of power. I even wrote "will last for decades" as we were tasting within the first hour, but this wine changed after about two hours into something far less interesting. My "92" is a mental average of it being a "94" for the first hour but ending as a "90" at best, which shouldn't be happening with a wine form this vintage.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
1967 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
86 points
Exactly what you'd expect from an old Barolo in terms of roses and pale red fruit to start. Never really developed after the mustiness blew off. Good balance and texture but simple flavors.
Red
1989 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
flawed
Thin and disappointing. Not certain if it was damaged, but not like any Giacosa 89 I've tried before.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
flawed
No question on this one - serious heat damage. I guess it was on that wrong shipment from France to the USA.
Red
1978 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Only note I seem to have written was "good fruit." Oh well, it was late in the evening.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
1982 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
At its peak. This wine balances lush black fruit with great texture and the emerging charm that comes with bottle age. Still showing lots of pepper and lovely bacon flavors. Long, evolving finish. Not the best bottle I've ever had, but a very pleasurable wine.
Red
1983 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
I know it's over 25 years old, but this bottle showed more age than expected. It had a really good spice profile but not the concentration and rich flavors I hoped for. Was it slightly heat damaged?
Red
1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
97 points
Black fruit with great spice on the nose. Similar fruit profile on palate. Floral charm unfolds with time in the glass, this wine has layers upon layers of flavor and texture. Dense, rich, concentrated, still almost completely primary. Second time I have tried this wine. First time - it was the best Rhone wine I ever had, this one just a shadow behind. I hate when a Rhone wine is WOTN when there are plenty of great Burgs on the table!

Closing

Sad for the number of flawed bottles, but the great bottles' excellence made it worth the effort!
