Gros Family "Reunion" with Richebourg and Clos Vougeot++

Boka - Chicago IL

Tasted February 28, 2011 by Burgundy Al with 838 views

Introduction

I've enjoyed older Jean Gros wine and consider Anne Gros one of my absolute Vosne-Romanee favorites. So the Lieu-dit Cru decided to have a Gros family reunion of sorts, with mostly Clos Vougeot and Richebourg from Anne Gros, Jean Gros, Michel Gros and Gros Freres. Sorry none from A&F tonight. REALLY sorry about the corked bottles!

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Nose shows lemon and lemon zest with rich buttery and bready notes. Same lush, rich flavors, perhaps some apple and pear as well. Fruit seems quite ripe. Great textures and acidity.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2008 Domaine Dublère Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
94 points
Tasted double blind. Very crisp, precise and linear. This shows lemon flavors from the first sniff through the finish with sharp, focused minerality. Intense fruit on finish.
White
2008 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
92 points
Tasted double blind. Showed similar lemon, crushed stone and floral hints as the other blind wine in the next glass, but less engaging (than the impressive Dublere 08 Preuses). This is richer and more concentrated and probably more evolving in glass. This probably has more nuance and will really show great things if not consumed in its infancy.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
1990 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
91 points
Powerful on both nose and palate, this took quite a while to show much spice or charm. Black ripe fruit came out with some secondary hints. Good spice near the end. I'd be holding onto additional bottles another 3-5 years or longer for a little more integration.
Red
1984 Domaine Jean Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
86 points
Served single blind in a flight of mid-aged "Gros family" wine 1984-1993. Dark color. Showing ripe fruit on nose, same on palate, clearly showing Vosne spice as well. Certainly showing age on the palate, this didn't last long in glass.
Red
1987 Domaine Jean Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
89 points
Served single blind with older "Gros family" Grand Cru 1984-93. Great aromatics show clove, licorice and nutmeg with some black cherry and mushroom. Still big and muscular on palate, showing both fruit and earth flavors, although the fruit didn't stick around for very long. really pleasurable, balanced wine for the vintage.
Red
1993 Domaine Jean Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Served single blind in flight of older 1984-93 "Gros family" Grand Cru. Rich and powerful immediately on the nose, showing Richebourg from the second it was poured. Spice and black fruit on nose and palate with serious integrated tannins. Fruit shows so much solid extract and concentration that it was a sensational wine to sip, enjoy and revisit through the evening. Lots of long-term potential to get better as more serious secondary character more fully emerges. By far WOTF.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
1998 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Corked! Second corked bottle of Anne Gros 1998 Richebourg in past two years!
Red
1999 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
95 points
Tasted single blind in flight of similarly aged "Gros family" Richebourg. Incredibly lush and spicy, but also incredibly subtle and nuanced. Red cherry and black cherry on nose and palate. Lots of dizzying spice as well. Fruit is ripe but the acidity and tannins give this wine a sense of balance and really great texture. Easily WOTF since both others were corked (!) but also WOTN.
Red
1999 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
flawed
Corked.

Flight 5 (4 notes)

Red
1998 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
88 points
Served single blind with similarly aged "Gros Family" CV. Red fruit, a bit of oak and good spice - clove, cinnamon and nutmeg. Flavors are reasonably advanced for 1998 and now are very subtle, bordering on short. Spice shortens near finish. Enjoyable, drink up.
Red
1998 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
flawed
Corked.

Served single blind with similarly aged "Gros family" CV. Perplexing wine. Red and black fruit was rather muted and spice was a shadow of how this has tasted before. We wondered if it was possibly slightly corked but it didn't fade further with more air. But inconsistent with previous bottles, just around 87 points tonight.
Red
1999 Domaine Michel Gros Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
89 points
Served single blind with similarly aged "Gros family" CV. Really big, powerful and dense in every way. Wine was very enjoyable but I found its concentration got in the way of the wine's spice and elegance. Lots of black fruit, clearly very ripe with lots of also ripe tannins.

Flight 6 (3 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
90 points
Tasted single blind in a flight of "Gros family" 2001s. Perfumed nose with red fruit and charming spice plus a bit of noticeable oak. Fresh red cherry and strawberry with good spice. Nicely balanced and charming, even if not particularly complex or nuanced.
Red
2001 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Served single blind with other 2001 "Gros family" Grand Cru. Easy to identify a good bottle of Anne Gros Richebourg. Red fruit - mostly red cherry and strawberry - with spoonfuls of charming, sexy spice. Great perfumed aromatics as well. Great texture and balance with an engaging, spicy finish.
Red
2001 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
88 points
Served single blind with other 2001 "Gros family" Grand Cru. Big lush fruit didn't seem very "2001" at first. Good spice really showed itself as very "Richebourg." Overall this came across as rather fruit forward without quite the level of acidity and structure that would make you cellar this further. This is at a very charming place now, but doubt it will be any better in 5 or 10 years.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Anne Gros Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
90 points
I opened these two bottles as mystery wines for the group. Since my group's visit to Anne Gros last spring, I have tried her Barreaux several times from several vintages and this might now be my favorite Villages level Burgundy. Enough said, if I write more then it will be even more difficult to ever find.
