Introduction

Awesome dinner for eight with a focus on pre 1990 Bordeaux.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Started with a cheese plate with assorted nuts and dried red currants. Pan fried calamari with red chile sauce and cilantro oil, which was surprisingly spicy and Carpaccio of Tuna.

White
2003 Château Carbonnieux Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
Pleasant wine that was lemon cream in color with a bit of grassiness and a background of some asparagus, with a finish that was very crisp with a hint of oak. 88-90
White
1995 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Beautiful deep gold color that smelled of mature pear with a hint of toasted honey that forecasted a powerful wine. Very balanced and refined acidity and tannins with a lingering finish. Loved this wine—it was smooth, refined, yet refreshing on a hot day. 91-93

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Assorted breads with a Frico salad - Field greens dressed with aged balsamic vinegar and tuscan olive oil in a parmesan cheese basket.

Red
1982 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Wonderful deep red color that still looked amazingly fresh. Opened and served immediately, with a hint of black and red currant smells and some very muted oak. Incredibly balanced acidity, with masculine tannins still present. This wine has aged very well and was certainly ready. 94-96
Red
1983 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Medium red, almost carmine in color, with the scents of cassis, asparagus and earth. Smooth and refined tannins with an amazing finish. 91-93

Flight 3 (7 notes)

Phenomenal flat iron steak served a perfect medium rare. C snuck in a 1995, which was well worth it.

Red
1989 Château Langoa Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
The color of deep falu red with the scent of black currants and subtle oak. Very refined and smooth tannins. 90-92
Red
1988 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
94 points
Very dark maroon red—amazing color. Smelled very young, tight with some herbaceous and red berry notes that was somewhat shut down initially, but opened up nicely over an hour. Still fairly tannic with great potential and a finish that lasted over 45 seconds. 91-94
Red
1989 Château Chasse-Spleen France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
90 points
Nice red color with muted red berry scents and a smooth finish. 88-90
Red
1990 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
91 points
Dark red wine with a wonderful bouquet of black currants with hint of green background notes of artichokes and asparagus. Tasted very young with very present tannins. 89-92
Red
1995 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
97 points
Awesome dark falu maroon red with the scent of black currants, earthy mushrooms and raspberries. Very refined tannins that mellowed over an hour (decanted for an hour as well). Wine definitely lingered on the palate with a finish that went on and on—I stopped timing at 45 seconds because I was distracted by some food. Amazing wine and my WOTN. 94-98
Red
1988 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Medium carmine red with nice legs and smooth tannins. Very classy amazing wine. 91-94.
Red
1990 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Medium ruby maroon red that smelled young and coated the glass with nice legs. Wonderful scent of red currants and raspberries, which was followed by a hint of green bell pepper and very subtle oak with a great finish. Needs more time. 92-94

Flight 4 (1 note)

MB chocolate cake with vanilla and chocolate gelato.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1995 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Awesome golden yellow that with a hint of light orange. Great Sauterne nose that immediately beckoned some botrytis and the complexity that comes with it. This wine did not disappoint, and was surprisingly light in texture—not nearly as heavy as many other Sauterne wines. 90-93
