New Year's Eve at A's home

Introduction

A very nice New Year's Eve dinner at A's home. Was in charge of bringing the wines, ended up being far too little as the group turned out bigger than planned. Double decanted the first three reds by pouring them in a decanter 2.5h before leaving for dinner, and pouring them back immediately before leaving.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
1999 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
Again very good showing of this wine, and consistent with the previous bottle. Relatively light but in perfect balance. Excellent QPR for a cru classe.
Red
1996 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Slightly better second bottle from case than the one last week however still not entirely convincing. The wood on both nose and palate seeemed more subtle this time but it is still there and for me somewhat irritating. The palate is generously creamy but seems a bit simple at this point in time. Medium finish. Perhaps really needs several more years in bottle
Red
2001 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
After struggling to pull out the absolutely tight sitting cork, I am surprised that this has no sediment whatsoever. Color, nose and palate, all shout "nice Super Tuscan". Clearly a well made Sangiovese/Merlot (?) blend but not a Brunello in my eyes. In the glass there is very little of the usual brick red. The Sangiovese is hwoever shinning through nicely but subtly on the nose, and on the palate which is medium weight and as good balance. Tannins are well integrated. Medium plus finish. 91-92
Need to try a Siro Pacenti post "Brunellogate".
Red
2008 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Here we started running out of the bottles that I thought we would drink, so unlike the other wines this was not properly decanted. Despite PnP only, this still young wine showed really well, and somewhat embarrassingly, was a notch above the earlier wines in my eyes. This drinks like a desert of chocolate and dark berries, very approachable but with enough structure to age. Looking forward to trying this again in a few years.
Red
2009 Thomas Studach Pinot Noir Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Graubünden, Malans
90 points
These last two bottles were not planned to be part of this dinner, and as young Pinot Noir this should have obviously been at the beginning and not the end. This seemed fairly muted on the palate, and obviously still needs some more time in bottle. Has more weight and is more settled and less "bubbly" than the 08 vintage a couple weeks ago. Surprised to see a wine reach 14% alcohol from this region. 90+
White - Sparkling
N.V. Pommery Champagne Brut Royal France, Champagne
87 points
Good but perhaps a bit light and simple
